I've recently gone on to Broadband with BT.

After a few minutes of inactivity, i.e. like writing an email, it chucks me out.
Trying to refresh the page makes no difference, it just comes up with the white unable to display page.

Is there any way to change the settings so it won't do this?

Assuming you're using a modem and Win XP and Outlook express :-

Open outlook express go to Tools > Connections see if the 'hang up after sending and receiving' box is ticked, untick if so.

Also in Internet Explorer check Tools >Internet Options> Connections>Lan Settings ensure that the box 'Use a proxy server' is UNchecked.

Yes, XP and using BT wireless broadband.

Outlook is ok, but if I took too long to type this response I'd get the error page.

The proxy server box is checked, as is the bypass proxy for local addresses.

I'll try unchecking the box - what does this do then??

Cheers

Thought I'd tag onto the end of this thread as I am having a similar problem. I'm with Orange/Wanadoo wireless broadband and following an upgrade of my line speed a while ago I was without any service for 2 weeks. In the meantime I installed software to give me a dial up service (free Tiscali disc).

Once my broadband came back on line I removed the Tiscali stuff and since then I've had problems.

Originally my broadband connection kept being interrupted by a window prompting me to connect to the dial up. This has now gone but my broadband service/wireless connection still diconnects every few minutes. The wireless connection symbol says the signal strength is good and reports that it is connected to the Wanadoo service but I have to then select the option to repair the wireless connection to start using the internet again. This happens with both Mozilla and Explorer.

Any suggestions as to how I can keep it connected all the time and is it the same sort of thing as above?

Assuming you're using a BB modem. In Internet Explorer check Tools >Internet Options> Connections>make your BB modem the 'default connection' rather than the old Tiscali dialup one. If using a wireless or other router, you should make sure the 'never dial a connection' setting is checked.

If using a BB modem/router which keeps 'dropping' the connection, you may need to check in the router's setup instructions if there's a 'keep alive' or 'idle timeout' setting required...you may need to increase one of them if so.

Cheers for the tips. Tried all of those but no joy I'm afraid. Any other ideas out there?
