Hi. Can't offer much advice on the alternatives, but I've been with BT for the last five years or so. Had some 'fun' when first setting it up, but that was in the bad old days of USB modems. I've been on the 'Total Broadband unlimited' since December; not the cheapest, but it works OK, and has the advantage of getting an extra (Voip) phone line.

The Home hub comes set with WEP security; I wasn't too happy with this, as I had my net gear router set on WAP, but a bit of nosing about and I found that the Home Hub can be set to use WAP as well.

Couple of friends' experiences: One got the Sky set up last year, and couldn't log in. I checked as far as I could for her; her daughter's laptop worked OK, but she was having fun getting the desktop to work. It could 'see' and connect to the router, but couldn't log in to the account, some problem with the password. It took her a couple of weeks of phone calls to get it sorted.

Another friend changed from Tiscali (with which she had a few issues, but nothing major) to Talk-Talk. Took a few weeks to get set up, and she did once spent about four hours on 'hold' trying to get hold of them for a problem. It was eventually sorted though, and she seems happy enouigh with it now.

I'll be sticking with BT though...

Dave.

Been with ntl/virgin for several years now for broadband/tv/phone and have only received excellent service. Couple of issues with modem but each time an engineer called within 24 hours and replaced it both times.
I hear that the broadband helpline is now free.

BT, not the cheapest but very. very reliable. Had it for many years and only once had a problem, which was BTs own equipment at the exchange. Recently had a problem with my router and I found the tech helpline very....ah...helpful.
Of course you will find folk that think BT are the spawn of the devil

I think BT are the spawn of the Devil....

:D

I've been with Virgin/ntl for several years on their cable broadband and phone, and never had any problems.

As stated, their BB helpline is now free.

Hi Mark,

Back to UK eh!! Unlucky mate :augie

Thats me back off to Germany in a month then straight back out to Iraq.:thumb2 I must say UK has been painful,

Anyway i went with BT - but be aware if you do that and get posted back overseas for instance, they will not waiver any cost you have on say 4 months left on contract. (O2 Mobile the same)

Even if you have to go back and spill blood and guts in Afghanistan, watch your friends die and live like a pig for Queen and country!! But hey...Sure there will be a few here to say..'You signed up for that' :rob

I would go with what Steve says above to be honest...Top bloke and always has some good advice in this section...Hi Steve:thumb2

Mac

Thanks all for the replys, Macca really looking forward to my last posting in Blighty, the money out here isn't what it used to be, fuel coupons have gone through the roof :blast, plus I get custody when I hit the UK, plus there might be people to go for a rideout in the UK with, nothing but excuses out here :augie anyway enjoy your tour, stay safe and make sure you get back on 2 wheels :thumb

I have a direct dial number to a dept within BT that deals specifically with Military. I was told 2 days ago that there is absolutely no way around it!!! If you know another dept or a cert that it can be waived then i would like to know pretty please :-)

Virgin seems to have got it's act together these days, the XL TV/Internet/phone package is GBP57 - quite a lot of money but I need the internet speed so it works for me.

The technical support still appears to be in Wales and is good these days, I have had reason to call them a couple of times this last week and I always got a prompt pick up and good responses from the team. :thumb2
