Oh well, why is it such a simple job turns into a nightmare?

Removing the exhaust today and low and behold no matter how careful I was ...SNAP... One gone here

Two gone here

So what was a simple job has now turned into removing the heads :thedummy

First of all does anybody now a reputable localish company (to me) that can remove all the studs and remains and replace them with Stainless steel ones?

Further more as I am pulling it down this far I am considering having the heads checked/overhauled. I am also considering having them blasted and recoated...is the original finish a powder coat...anything special because of the heat?

Whilst its down should I check/replace anything else like the camchain...piston...rings. The bike has 65000 on her. The exhaust and ports are quite black and sooty so it appears rich, the exhaust is a Remus Revolution and if I am looking at the right one the cat code plug was RED (doesn't sound right)!?

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Adie

Hopefully this might help. I use a guy called Barry Barber he use to be the technician at SPC. But went out on his own he has serviced my bike for some time and is alot cheaper than CW/SPC. The only thing he does not have is the BMW service computer to test the system. But for the general run of the mill servicing he is very good and a lot cheaper. Give him a call and ask for a price for a 24K service his number is 07810 713710

The above was found after I put the mans name in the search feature.

I haven't used him myself, but he's local to you. He might be able to help, or should point you in the right direction.

Don't worry about it -there are hundreds of BM's with only a couple of exhaust studs in place. They never give any trouble.

.

Look HERE, and you'll see the same problem. I get it everytime i work on them.

Don't waste your time or effort taking the heads off just to get the broken studs out. Get them done when you have to take the head off for something else.

I appreciate what your saying, but there is only one on one side left and thats pretty dodgy. Having worked on aircraft its not in my nature to leave stuff like this either, if I had been in my old job I could have done them myself so it sucks even more. The heads etc are pretty corroded so there plenty to be done if I pull it down. Its probably all good maintenance...just knowing where to stop!:augie

I had the same problem a while back, Adie.

I was trying a different exhaust system & snapped 3 of the 4 studs on my 1150. After unsuccessfully trying easyouts, I drilled out the centres of the studs & used a dremel tungsten carbide cutting drill to open them out until the threads were just visible. Cleaned the threads up with a tap & ran the new studs into the holes. On one of them, I overran the threads, so I just stuck a helicoil in it. None of this required the removal of the heads form the bike...

When mine did the same i was able to warm the head & used erwin nut extractors which griped the stud . Removed the lot & fitted bolts
