Broken F800GS: 20miles into European Trip!

It started rattling at around 3k.

"They're all like that"

Gradually got worse at 6k and 12k

"They're all like that, just how they sound."

At 15k I had them look again as the paint was flaking off the engine.

"Hmmm, I'll see what they say"

18k service.

"Yeah, it is a bit rattly, they'll change the engine casings so we'll have a look then."

Took it in at 22k and something after a big (for me) Euro trip and sure enough, pistons, barrels, rings and all the other stuff I don't understand.

Got shut immediately after.

What year is yours? Didn't it come with the redesigned pistons anyway?

You must have been to F800riders.org and unless all complaints are now censored which wouldn't surprise me then you'll find a lot of threads about it.

Sorry, I should have said. I didn't have a loss of power that you experienced except when they had the antenna ring recall thing.

Lovely....................i'll bypass the 800 twin engine

Pity.................it seems an ok bike.....................maybe the detuned version is better:nenau

:)

BMW have agreed to stump up all costs and fix the bike for free! Thank god as I don't know where I'd have found £3000. Question is now do I keep it and carry on using it or do I mark it as a bad do and get shut? Opinions?

Having had a 5min browse of the F800 forum:eek:

I would do what others do and sell

Buy a Transalp:thumb2

BMW seem to have 'lost their way' on longevity at present.................even the 2010 Boxers have had to undergo a mod to the DOHC cam after launch and worldwide production:eek:

Some people have good experience of the new models..................but many more don't:confused:

I would buy a good 1100GS or 1150 GSAdv:thumb2 .......................then you'll be a happy man:clap

Glad your bike is getting fixed.

For info had a friend with a 3 year old harley he had it from new and was dealer serviced for the first 12 months (12 month warranty), then serviced by independent, at the 3 year point the main bearings failed and he went back to harley and they refused to help at all.
He ended up taking it to the small claims court and Harley ended up footing the bill for the entire cost of the repairs.
Its always worth giving it a go

Result.

On what to do next...

I was a little hasty and lost a lot on a 'high mileage' bike. I firmly believe that the guy who bought it got an absolute bargain, since it had most of a new engine at that point but he bought it with the 'high mileage' discount.

Moved to an R1100s so I could do my own service and have fewer issues. No problems at all with that bike until a pretty young thing decided to put her car in it's path in a 70 KPH zone.

Took a '55 K1200s which had a new clutch, ecu, abs unit, zfe unit and main wiring loom all under warranty. So now I've chopped in on an 1150 GSA, again so I can do my own servicing and have fewer problems (I hope).

In your position, if you like the bike, I'd see if BMW wont sell you another years warranty and hang on to it. If they don't have enough faith to sell the warranty then get rid.

PBoy, mine is on an 08 plate, which was your and was it a GS?

'06 plate F800s

Easy - FLOG IT and QUICKLY !!

Hurray!!!!!

Finally, finally, finally after 5 weeks without the bike it turns up on my door step today, complete with what can only be descibed as a new engine (and chain and sprockets). Been out for a couple rides and getting back into it, but it's hard when your limited to 4000rpm.

Good luck! I hope nothing happens from now on. Are you still going to go on your trip or is it now on the back burner? :beerjug:

Oh drat

All that worry about getting mine fixed. Forgot I'll have to run it in again!
So it is a known issue?
