I have just had new tyres fitted to my '25 bike (Michelin Anakee 2s, since you didn't ask).

I was backing slowly down a gentle gradient when the rear mudguard 'popped', one of the three arms snapped, and the screws went I don't know where. I don't have any obvious additions that got in the way (tool kit etc).

I have read that others have had this problem - it seems mad to me that BMW engineered in such a design flaw (I am assuming that it is design).

That's logical. It may be that the mechanic forgot to replace the two lower screws both missing, the thread looks ok.

So “BMW’s design flaw” looks more like a tyre monkey’s error🙄

Quack quack :nod

Those screws have thread lock on them so even if you don’t renew it they’re highly unlikely to shake free

I’d be having a word with the tire place about a new scraper

Good God. And the words were 'may be'. BMW are still looking at it.. Others have had an issue, particularly off road, where wheel travel conflicts with the guard. Also when backing the bike.

One of the reasons I use this site is the helpful and friendly responses from people who may have come across similar issues, or want to help. Some are just sarcastic; fortunately they are few in number.

I’m not sure that invoking a deity makes it any clearer…..how about:-

“Could you explain how forcible contact between spinning tyre and the guard, complete removes two screws (not sheared as you said there was “no sign” ) of breaking the plastic?”

There's absolutely no possibility for this guard to contact anything at full suspension compression, also no possibility for rolling the bike backwards to effect the guard is any way. It seems obvious that two bolts, (possibly the two upper ones) came out and the guard swung down and was run over while backing up causing it to "pop" as one of the struts broke

My assumption of a design flaw was indeed incorrect. Based on the one screw that remained it looks as if they were fitted without threadlock and worked loose. Replaced under warranty.

I also agree with comments that it is not possible for wheel movement to cause this, though Ai suggests it as a contributory factor on rough tarmac or off road.

I have taken that guard off many times over both my 1300 and 1200 before. I have never used threadlock but always done it up to the correct torque spec (which isn't a lot)

I reckon it just wasn't done up properly in the first place.
