Broken Spindle ????

Hi,I put my bike into Motorrad in Glasgow today for its 10,000 km service,
they phoned me later to say that it wouldn't be ready today as they broke the spindle while putting the front wheel back on !!! . How do you break a wheel spindle ???? its a big steel tube !!!!! Should I be suspicious ???, have they belted it with a hammer and knackered it ??? What do you think ?, anyone come across this before ? Thank's.

The whole fekkin bike is sponsored by Cadbury (or the Bavarian equivalent)... a rolling shunt from behind at 10MPH resulted in a bill to my insurance company of £4.5K

My PD suffered a scuffed indicator and a scuffed headlight grill against the HP2 needing a new subframe, rear light cluster and plastics, new bevel drive and new swing arm

It wasn't the wheel spindle on mine,but the big aluminium bolt that screws into the end of it.I'm not 100% sure,but I think it all comes together.The flange on the bolt comes away,so it looks like a washer underneath it.I wouldn't worry about it(unless of course they've had a hammer on it!)

Judge,learn to ride mate,it's a lot cheaper for everyone(or get a bike with decent brakes instead of that crock of shite you ride around on )

there's a guy off this site who had a fairly low speed off, the bike bounced from one cylinder to the other resulting in a snapped HP2

I don't don't know owt, but when I got it (ex school bike is wales) front spindle knackered bike had less than 1000miles on it. Stupid aluminium bolt thing fell out and was stuffed, seat fell off currently held on with gaffa tape cos the little bolt disappeared the crap metal clips holding the mudguard on fell of due to perhaps my riding style...

rear mudguard fell off, currently also held on with gaffa tape, I snapped a few screws off in the frame due to perhaps my inability to make something to a professional standard... OOPS front panel was held on with gaffa tape as I knicked the screws to hold the rear on...

Took the petrol tank off again to fit something else I found on the floor

got more bits left over

Chocolate Aluminium Bolt

I have been making a mess, out of the Aluminium bolt
that sits in the front spindle.
So I have had 2 new ones made, ( 1 in reserve), in
stainless steel, a little bit heavier,but I dont care.
And of course, I have to use common sense when I tighten
it up, I think the bolt is harder than the spindle is, but
it works perfect for me, and costed 2 beers.

Yup i'm just in the process of getting a bolt made for same reason and having a few shims made so I can pack out the connectors for the luggage I made to take the strain off the screws made from the softest cheese on the planet...

I just had to replace mine at $29.00nz. I over tightened the screw as the torque did not work correctly.

On every other bike I own, I use the trusty method of standing on the socket wrench & making sure the spindle bolt is tight before I ride off. On the HP2 I hadn't even got it arm tight before the pesky blighter disintegrated ( although I am good at arm wrestling... ).

Now whenever swapping my wheels, I tighten it till it bites and then give it a little tweak. . It takes surprisingly little effort to break that flange off that aluminum spindle nut and I reckon everyone will do it once. Maybe.

Good thing you did not do 15MPH, it would of been a total write off. Those PD as well fekin ard innit

i went through three shitty alloy axle nuts, when i ordered my fourth one i was glad to find they now supply a metal one using a hex key socket. It's far stronger and my shop said this is now the replacement part.

Gaffer tape..... Wheel spindles made of chocolate.... How I laughed!!
Its like a bloody comedy show.
People pay top money for a top quality bike and they are being let down.
C'mon BMW get your act together. (R&D, quality control etc)
Suzuki 1250 Bandit, half the price, and never seem to have any issues.
(according to my mate) an ex 1150GSA owner. Probably not to everyones taste though!

My replacement arrived today - same "chocolate" as the original
although I was told there had been a redesign.
