Broken windscreen pin thingy

I ended up replacing the circlip with a short length of locking wire, lost three circlips and one pin in 3 months ...

Haven't lost mine (yet) some people saying that you can get metal replacements???? mine look like stainless steel anyway, confused???

Mine was stainless steel too ..

I've just rung Wollaston in Northampton: they are ordering me a pair of pins and clips and posting them to me. I'm happy with that. I'll make sure I've got back up when I venture in to Europe though!

Mine are stainless as well, 2014 basic model, maybe BMW have recognised there is a weakness here and upgraded the pin on newer machines?

Mines was one of the very first 2013 machines in the country and they are steel - so I reckon some of the posters are confused as to what was being referred to.

Re different versions, I asked this very question to the dealer. Mines also an early 2013 model so wanted to know if part numbers were different.
Dealer checked and they arent.
Seems like I need to carry some bolts around with me from now on !

Im sure BMUU will supply them at a very reasonable cost of £16.50 + vat + shipping  :augie:augie:augie:augie :D

It just so happens......

It just so happens that my mate sat next to me has just mentioned the same thing.

I don't know what's causing it,vibration maybe, but I have fitted a bracket to my screen to reduce the vibration and I'm thinking about developing a stainless steel replacement pin (clevis pin) with a shoulder at one end and a hole for a split pin which will completely eradicate the current problem.

Lost right screen pin too - got mailed out a freebie (pin and e-clip) next day by Bahnstormer. Pays to ask...

Lost the left hand one on my bike too.

Bahnstormers will replace it FOC duirng the 6K service in a couple of weeks so I'll put a small pin in for the time being.

They are aware a few have come out & couldn't say offhand if the part has been modified recently.

Mark Hooton, if you do come up with a simple replacement I'll take a couple please ...

Yes I would be interested in a couple as well. Just a thought Mark, the EXISTING ones could be drilled and a clevis or spit pin used as you say? Just need someone who we can post them to and has the right skills.... for a reasonable charge. :D

It's weird how some fall off and others don't - I have had another minor fault on my bike related to the screen that has occurred twice without explanation (although I have my suspicions as to the cause) - third time lucky I hope :)

I have done a search but not one other person has ever mentioned this issue as far as I can see so I won't say what it is unless it happens a third time

Was washing my bike 2 weeks ago and noticed two halves of an e-clip on my garage floor. Turned out it came from the left screen pin. Rode gently to local dealer but pin started to vibrate out so put it in my pocket. Apparently the e-clips breaking are quite common.

When I traded my 2013 GS in, the dealer pointed out both e-clips were missing, luckily the pins had stayed put.

Resurrecting an old thread here but here is my solution to the disappearing e clips on the screen pivot pin. I'm sure many people could do a better or more "engineered" job but if so, where are your posts?

I bought a pack of the following;

6mm (M5 thread) x 25 Allen Cap Shoulder Screw Bolts (4)

M5 Threaded end x 9mm long to shoulder

6mm shoulder x 25mm long to head of bolt

3mm Allen Key Drive

Black 12.9 High Tensile Steel (an ebay purchase)

The pic shows a comparison between the windscreen pin and the new bolt.

Add a stainless washer which fits over the shoulder and one which does not, and a nylock nut. When fitted you can fully tighten the nylock nut and still rotate the bolt with your fingers.
Admittedly its not as neat as the original, although you can't see the pins when you're riding the bike anyway, and not at all if you have a tinted screen. At least I know I won't have to carry spare pins and clips when I go away.

Total cost of a couple of quid.

Sweet. Nice work. My nearside pin came lose but I saved it in time a couple of days ago (obviously quite annoying after the offside one came out as per the op)...
I will give this a whirl.
