Well, today my BT Broadband service broke the 0.5Mbps download speed! Much better than the 0.17Mbps record of last week.

Those nice people in India told me there was a fault around my service, but it will improve linearly over the next 10 days. So, being positive, performance has already increased by over 100%.

Well done BT! I look forward to "up to 8Mbps speeds" next week.

Absolute feckin' bollox.

Cheers,

Neil.

I moved house approximately 100 yards and ours went down by 2Mbps. The nice man in India said it was because there were more houses around our new address. No, just the same 4 houses that have always been here.... :blast Feckwits, the lot of them.

if they're offering 20mb, it means they have put new adsl2 equipment in the exchange.

most subscribers will see an increase in speed over vanilla adsl, but only those who can see the exchange when they open their curtains should expect anything like 20mb ;)

As Cookie says, the only way you'll get 20Mb is in the exchange.

Unfortunately, I think the spiel is "up to 20MB" with loads of get-outs - I'm 2km from the exchange and my "up to 8Mb" occassionally makes it to 2.5... maybe 3 with a tail-wind.

It's dependant on the type of cable(s) and the quality and number of joints between yourself and the MUX in the exchange.

:type

the good news is, my "up to 8mb" went from about 3mb to about 5mb after switching to O2 adsl2, which is the same technology only about 1/3 the price of my old deal :)

dunno about bt's implementation, but O2 don't use any of that line training, restricted speed bollocks that bt clutter their old adsl service with. you might get a few more dropouts, but the speed is higher :thumb2

I wish they would hurry up and get the kit in our local exchange to allow me the option of choosing o2 and similar. The exchange is about 1km away, and I usually get 7.X mb but the contention can high at times.

We lost our BT Broadband for about 10 days due to a faulty circuit at the exchange - have to admit since it was replaced our speed has gone from about 3mbps to about 6mbps and this has increased slowly over time !

Every now and again when testing using www.speedtest.net I get results over 10Mbps !!

Not sure how accurate it is but it certainly seems faster !

We too have been offered a 20MB connection, at the moment I get roughly 6.5MB on 'vanilla' ADSL, that said I could walk to the exchange from my house in my dressing gown without many people noticing :-)

Erm , mine was 0.33mbps ..... bit slow what :P

I'm with Sky but comes free with the basic chanel package , but they do you for calls ........ :(

My results on an 'upto 8mb BT Broadband Connection'

I'm looking forward to an upto 20mb service, shame there's no plans to upgrade my local exchange to that service anytime soon

So what's going on here then? BT up to 8Mbs connection. This was the best of 3 tests - the worst returned 18Mbps.

******* you, Paul Wakefield!

Did a speedtest.net at 1130 this morning: 0.38Mbps download.

Called those nice people in India, who told me that it depends on distance from the exchange, number of people using the service, etc. They got me to do the speedtester.bt.com - which showed 6.89Mbps. Did the speedtest.net again - 6.92Mbps!

In return for being so complimentary about BT's speed at fixing problems, they told me my local Exchange was to be upgraded to support 20Mbps by February 2010.

But having seen Mr Wakefield's last post I shall have to complain about that . . .

Cheers,

Neil.

BT Broadband Speed

Hi Neil,

I had issues with my BT broadband speed. Sometimes when I phoned to complain it miraculously improved during the phone call, and the nice people in India say they didnt do anything. After quite a few phone calls they sent out a guy from openreach to have a look & he wanted access to the home, I said I'm sure you dont need it 'cause I'm convinced the problem is with your cabling / exchange. Anyway , guy comes out, cant find any fault but changes phone plate on main socket to latest type. After a few weeks I'm back to download speeds that were actually slower than my upload speed. After a few more calls, with the speed improving during / after the call, they send out another guy from openreach. This one had asked to see where the PC lived & how the modem was connected and straight away says "thats your problem". I had an extension running from another room. We try his modem & speedtester downstairs in the main socket and all is fine, speed is much improved . He gets out some test gear & checks the lines from the exchange just to be sure. Ever since then I connected my modem to the main BT socket & them wirelesly to any PC's - no problem since. He explained that although a "reset" at the exchange will improve things in the short term speed will decrease if there is a fault. Since then I know a few folks who have tried connrcting to the main BT socket (rather than an extension) and either cleared intermittent speed faults or just generally seen increased download speeds.

Not sure if this would help you, but might be worth a try ?

John
