Bungees and securing loads

These are good I think. Not used them, but they're designed with no leathal metal things on the end of boingy things! Will try em next time I need to buy bungee thingys.:)

Bungee straps are the work of satan... my mate lost his eye when one he was un hooking slipped from his hands and smacked him in the face. That's a proper horrible thing to look at, while saying it'll be alright mate.
I remember you posting this before :eek and it stuck in my mind so much that if/when I use normal bungees now (ie the ones with the hooks at the end) I always keep the visor down, and even then I stand to one side ... just in case. There was a fatal accident last year too IIRC, when a normal bungee came loose and got tangled in the rear wheel.

Big Ortleb bag and Rokstraps, job done :thumb2
Another vote for Rokstraps from me. :thumb2 I bought a pair from Nippy Norman for £19 just before this years Hograost and they were brilliant. I should have bought them years ago - they would probably have saved my Ortlieb bag which held my tent bag at the 2007 Hograost. :o What I did find useful is you're carrying a few things eg 2 camping chairs, a Khyam tent and 2 Rollmats, is to bungee them together before strapping the lot to the bike. I bungeed the chairs together, bungeed the Rollmats together - then bungeed the 2 piles together, then Rokstrapped the lot to the bike, and they didn't move an inch in 3 hours of riding. I've also got a Touratech luggage rack (bought new off this site for £50) and it's fantastic. :clap

Hi Skynet, where did you get the tie down 'buckles' that you have screwed to your Vario that the bungies are attached to, also did you fit some on the inside edge of the pannier or is the other end of the bungies attached to the rear seat carrier?

The tie down buckles are from Hein Gerricke. Since then I have installed another set were the Vario panniers expand. These can be used with the other pannier ones or for smaller stuff on the rear seat. I have attached photos showing the buckles and where you can loop bungee or webbing straps through the pannier rails on the bike. I leave my webbing strap, bungee's on all the time as they tuck away out of site behind the panniers/seat.

Nice and tidy setup you have got there. As I don't have a pillion with me I will probably put behind me accross the seat. I have seen some cheap straps on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=360078039889&Category=25632&_trksid=p3907.m29), good enough?? Or shall I get some from a bike shop?

I have got a few of the those straps and they are very good for the money. I used them to secure a tent to my top box on a recent camping trip and will be using them again this weekend. They will be waaaaayyyy too long, so do a practice run and mark where you need to cut them. Heat up the blade of a sharp knife and cut them on a chopping board at an angle, this will make them easy to thread through the clamps and also avoid fraying.

Cheers, ordering them now. Thanks again for the info.

Fingers crossed I will be going to the East Midlands meet. Quite a big thing for me as I have not done something like that for many many years.

Just need a bit of advice for securing the load I will be taking (got my 2 BMW cases and top case, should be enough really to put most of my stuff but I will need to secure tent, sleeping bag and mattress and couple of other things. What is the best way to go about it. Shall I buy one of those waterproof bag and bang everything in it, or leave everything separated. Can anyone recommend some bungees or else to secure the stuff (bought some when I was in Spain but they are pretty crap. Thanks

Hi
I use these , the palm heavy duty type , they do a shorter version as you wont need 7 metres :) http://www.roho.co.uk/acatalog/Robin_Hood_WS_Transport_Accessories_185.html ,

Also i can recommend the following dry bags , as good as Ortlieb and Exped, i have the large and extra large to store my tent, sleeping bag and airic sleep mat.

Can recommend Alpkit, i use alot of their kit , great prices and quality,
i am nothing to do with either company by the way ...

I have used webbing tied off at one end to the bike, wrapped around whatever you are trying to secure and then secured a short bungee at the other end to keep the tension on as the bags as they invariably squash down with riding. The emphasis on SHORT bungee to prevent the accidents previously described. Straps nearly always need re tensioning after riding for a while as bags etc compress.

Just my 2p

Thanks Paul, the bags look good and priced reasonably, are you saying that they are "heavy duty", by this I mean that they will last for a while. Thanks
