Butterfly Valve - Exhaust Valve - Exhaust Flapper - Sticking or Seized Valve - Delete BMW R1250GS/A

It’s interesting that he removes the control cables , so as to pry open the spring and lubricate the pin inside .
I, on the other hand , simply ‘fill the spring’ with a good dollop of copaslip. I also lube the internal flap ( but bet that disappears very soon ).For 9 years it’s worked flawlessly.

No. Blood biker and we use our own bikes a lot of the time. Average 10k a year. If I do go out for a social ride, never less than a 100 miles. Just to add, this is on a RT but exactly the same flap. Our fleet 1250s have also all had new headers

Just out of interest, how do you get into that line of work?

Looking at options and possible routes to take ready for my police retirement in 3 years time.

Sounds like a job I would enjoy, while utilising skills I have had a long time.

It’s volunteer work. Just find out who your local group is, and then contact them. We have a couple of retired police and about 10% are ex military. Our group requires either IAM or RoSPA pass, but if you are a police advanced, we accept that qual.

Think he removes the Cable so he can rotate the flap easily

I've recently joined the blood bikers. You need an up to date AIM/Roadsmart or police advanced test and training through induction with the blood biker group local to you. Not for the feint hearted as it involves riding year round on basically evening shifts, all totally voluntary. I think of them as the unseen emergency service! I'd say go for it, as good riders are always welcomed and it helps spread the effort between volunteers (y)

Intriguingly , rotating the flap easily was not required in my 2014, because Ignition on and the flap rotated itself a few times as a routine .
HOWEVER , new ECU fitted last year and that preliminary rotation no longer happens, as if programmed differently .

It is. There was a software update. The flap no longer rotates on ignition on

I think the point of taking the cables off is to allow the valve to be rotated by hand as he squirts the copaslip in and onto the shaft to get full coverage as well as allowing him to press down then release the assembly which gives the copaslip a chance or working down into the bearing area (recommends spending 5/10 mins doing this "press and release as the valve is moved back and forth)

Is it true that you have to pay for your own petrol ?

Is it true that you have to pay for your own petrol ?
You get the costs of petrol used refunded but some areas also operate fuel cards. Basically, you provide the helmet (must be white or predominantly white and doesn't have to be flip front, but it's more convenient if it is), your riding gear (dark or black riding trousers preferred) and you pay towards the cost of the Hi Vis jacket. As most bikers already have most of the kit, it's really the Hi Vis and a white helmet most volunteers need. For the cars, you need an advanced car qualification in addition to the advanced bike one for the bikes. The hardest part for most volunteers will be doing the equivalent of the "Knowledge" to know where to go for each different shout. That's taken care of by shadowing other duty blood bikers for each destination. You also have to undergo training for the co-ordinator role (which takes care of the training for apps used for notifications and reporting), for specialist handling training for each of the item types you have to transport and there are various other induction requirements including mandatory help at fund raising events which is vital to the service provision funding.

It's all very worthwhile and does a heck of a lot of good. Out of hours trauma patients (RTC's etc) and others in need of meds etc possibly will never realise that their treatment was partly reliant on what the BB service does.

Some groups use fully marked and charity bikes. We do not, we predominately use our own bikes and yes we pay our own fuel. Fuel is only provided if you use one of our fleet bikes. We do not stipulate you have to have a white helmet, you can wear whatever helmet you like. We have a small joining fee and we provide the blood bike jacket, but they belong to the charity and have to be handed back when you leave.

Getting back on topic :) After 1500 miles of trouble free exhaust valve, it decided to throw up the fault again. Will be getting it looked at on the 14th Nov...... A good opportunity to test ride the 1300....

I visited Vertu BMW Shipley (Allen Jefferies) on Saturday for the open day thing, had a bacon butty, cup of coffee and just as I was turning out of their road to set off home a yellow engine management light warning came on. I went back in and luckily the workshop staff were still about and able to have a look.
The flapper is faulty and going to be replaced at the service on the 26th, though I’m sure he said the exhaust will be replaced, do they replace the header rather than just the valve?

On my 2019 R1250GS, they replaced the headers - seems a crazy expensive solution.

The flapper valve is not a piece that can be replaced, it is part of the headers. Valve issue, new headers, which is fine if your bike is still under warranty (BMW Insured extended warranty doesn't cover it). Headers are something like £1200

I bought my bike last June, it is a Dec 2019 build, so I guess a 2020 model year that was delivered with only 2770 miles on it. Fortunately the Approved Used Warrantee does cover it. The service department at Reiten wanted to make sure it was covered before booking it in.

Fortunately I’m still in the warranty period, until Jan 24, after that I’ll be doing the copper grease lube that Carl showed in his video.

My exhaust valve was stuck and caused the engine management light to turn on.

I followed the steps in this video and have got in largely freed, such that the error has cleared itself but it’s still not moving completely freely.

I’ve removed the exhaust and it doesn’t look too clever inside!

I’m going to try and get some copper grease or graphite powder into the lower bearing and clean out the internals. Looks pretty corroded though.

I wish I’d known about this before and could have kept it lubricated. Looks like it will fail eventually and the bike is a 21 plate so out of warranty.

Remove the cables , which than makes it easy to work the flap back and forth with fingers . Flood the top spring with copper grease and massage grease into the bottom swivel . Eventually it’ll be like new .
Don’t turn ignition on whilst cables disconnected or may get a fault code . ( I can’t remember if it’ll self clear thereafter or not )

Just get a Healtech exhaust flap servo eliminator for forty quid, leave the flap to seize in the fully open position and forget about it...
