Anyone done this? providing the bike is ok and there are no outstanding finance issues are there any potential pifalls? I'm assuming that if a bike has come direct from an insurance company that it should be straightforward to apply for a V5?

Only after an independent report on the condition of the bike and then only if they'll sell it to you really really cheap.
If the bike has been stolen and damaged, unless it has been repaired to a particular standard the bike will always have a 'tag' on the DVLA and PNC records, stating that it was an insurance right off at a point during it's lifetime.

Cheers for that info.
The bike had been pinched and was found in a lock-up. then was bought off the insurance company. it's mint with fairly low miles and appearance wise looks totally genuine.
I've rang bennets for a quote and given them the details and the VRM and they didn't mention anything over the phone :nenau
Will try an call in at the cop shop on the way home.

Perhaps the records on the ANPR system still shows it as stolen....

In that case be prepared to get pulled every five minutes for the next year or two ;)

There's sure to be others out there that will cause less grief..

I haven't done this, but I have bought written off bikes twice. There's no problem at all, as long as you get it good and cheap and make sure you get good title. It's not really any more difficult getting insurance as long as you're totally open. But it'll never be worth as much come sale time, so you're either buying a keeper or you need to get it really cheap. Did I mention it needs to be CHEAP?!

If the bike was actually purchased back off the Insurance company after it was recovered, then providing you can get supporting paperwork from the insurers to the effect that the vehicle was theirs to sell, they having settled the original lost/stolen claim following the original theft and you can produce any other supporting paperwork, you should be able to go to the police and have any outstanding markers on the National Computer removed. This might have to be done by the County Force who put the original lost/Stolen report on the system. Did they give you any idea as to what the extent of the interest on the bike was? It could have been unpaid speed camera tickets!!
