Buying advice: R850R (UK)

The black one is definitely a 850 R Classic. It came with a six-speed gearbox and swingarm (the shorter swingarm accomodates for the longer gearbox) and the 1150-like wheels and brakes, and the looks of the previous version : front wishbone, tank and seats are 1100R-like.

I only remember them with spoked wheels and extra chrome so there you go...

Looking closely at the red one that's a very clean bike... The side of the silencer/collector looks spotless...

Ah man you’re killing me !!

I actually prefer the simpler/classic styling of the tank before the latest redesign..

Waiting for a callback on the black one. I’m also thinking being a trade sale there’s a bit more security and inspection, the guy has good reviews… whereas the red, if there’s driveshaft noise or clutch wear (splines?) I’m not confident I could diagnose them and then what!!

Spoke with seller at some length (yes a six speed with classic looks!!), inspired confidence and confirmed consumer protection on the clutch/shaft for months after sale. Also full servicing and £100 off. Will put down deposit. Zero pressure too.

And now let’s find a nicer screen and maybe new mirrors lol - 😂 - also that topbox frame 😁

Thank you so much everyone - will keep

I’ve owned an 1150r and am curious - define high speed? I’ve never managed a high speed on one and thought it dull and very predictable. I wouldn’t be investing in a steering damper the handling is totally sublime the best part of it the engine/gearing is what lets it down as a roadster imho.

I have a 2004 1150R, had it for about 15 years, used it as a loan bike for my customers for a few years.
Hydraulic clutch, 6 speed gearbox. Never had any trouble with it, just routine servicing and consumable parts replaced, still has original brake discs. In fact it still has the original alternator belt fitted ( I have an old spare one under the seat, and changing it only takes 5 minutes on an R with no crash bars or other crap bolted to it :D

Customer gave me his old 1150R fly screen, doesn’t do much except direct the airflow straight up into your visor, which makes it uncomfortable riding at any speed with your visor or flip front lid in the up position, which I do most of the time ..

UPDATE

Recovered my stolen bike today! Apparently the police were attending on the night and it was found in a field.. :) It had been sitting in a local recovery yard for weeks until I was notified... The steering lock was snapped (a metal prin dropped when I attempted to start it). Key wouldn't go in. Fortunately it was very close to my local garage, where they know the bike, so they very kindly helped out with transport and inspection. Ordered another ignition barel from motorworks and will fit it soon. Bike started easy once the damaged part was removed. Quick question: I hear some horror stories about the steering lock issue causing structural damage in some cases?! Anything in particular to look closely at!?

Am so glad as hard to find in alpine white and I think it fits the bike well!!!.. :p Also may be able to use the £100 deposit for the black one to buy some gear off the same trader. Big thumb's up there again!

Thanks so much again everyone for all your input and for bearing with me
