Good evening,

I would like your opinion on a possible switch from an R850R to an R1150R.

Condition:
The 850 is in fair to poor cosmetic condition, but good (not perfect) mechanically. It has no dents or crash damage, but it has rust, and the clear coat on the tank etc. has started to peel.
I have disabled the faulty ABS unit. The clutch plate (I think) makes a small noise, which stops when I pull the clutch lever, and it has stayed the same since I bought the bike (1.5 years and 13,000 km ago).
It now has 172,000 km.
I also know nothing about the bike history.

A friend is selling the 1150 VERY cheaply.
It is like new both cosmetically and mechanically, despite its 600,000 km, because everything gets replaced before it needs to be.
The ABS was replaced some years ago at an authorized workshop, which has done all of its services.
I don’t remember exactly what had to be replaced.
I think the speedometer was also replacd after a fall, which is why it shows fewer km than the real figure.

Use:
I use the 850 like a scooter: about 60 km a day (in good weather) for work and small errands around the house, plus maybe 2-3 trips a year when the family is away.
The 1150 would do the same job if I switch.
It’s not for Sunday rides (yet).

I like the 850 better cosmetically.
In my opinion it looks more retro.
But I estimate the 1150 has more life left and better parts availability, since it must have sold better.

And if the ABS gives trouble again, I will delete it. I haven’t had any problem so far riding the 850 without ABS.

Also, the 850 will be very hard to sell because of its looks, and I’m thinking of spending money on a repaint to help a possible sale.

Anyone who hasn’t gotten bored reading this far, please take 5 minutes to share your opinion.

Thank you in advance.

P.S. Do they have the same luggage mounts?

I loved my r859r. Called her barbera. Still on the road with a member on here. Had an 1150 and 1150 gsa. Preferred Barbara. On a 1200 now that I prefer to the oil heads. I’d keep the 850. Just my two cents.

option c: have both

run the 850 until it is beyond economic repair for daily use - don't spend anything on making it shiny

run the 1150 on longer trips where the extra oomph might be more useful, then run it until beyond economic repair after the 850 expires.

Love the bike too, in terms of use and looks, if i didn't i would go straight for the 1150, which looks a little more ''modern'' to my taste.

I would really appreciate telling what does the 850 did better for you than the 1150.

And if the luggage mounts are the same, the 1150 comes with no bags ( suitcase don't remember how they are called )

Didn't crossed my mind, thank you.

- Or i just might use it till i sell it, if it ever get's sold, good cosmetic condition is more important than mechanical when it comes to selling a vehicle, even at a low price -

For me it was just smoother and less tractor like. But I’m a big guy and found it rather dnsll
