buying used 1100: walk away reasons?

As said earlier, Take it for a good ride, using all the gears fairly harshly, but dont Rev its Nuts right off
If all seams to be in place and it sounds smooooth with no realy noisy rattles etc, BUY the bugger
Is there anyone from this site near you that could possibly have a look at it with you?

If you ask the seller if the bikes recorded and he says No, then technically he has misled you and that is an offence, and you would have to take him to law to try and prove it

If you don’t ask the question directly he is not obliged to tell you.

If you were to buy a bike from a dealer and its found to be recorded then you have full protection under the law and you can get your dosh back.

This has nearly happened to me twice over the last couple of years, a really nice guy from Bristol had an 1150 on e-bay, just like the last post, nice guy, nice house, and the only thing that made me suspicious was its lack of service history in early life.
At the 11th hour I HPI'd it and found cat C and that 8 people had run HPI checks in the last week.
The owner denied he knew it was recorded, my guess is that he didn’t HPI it before he bought it ( he hadn’t had it long) and was trying to off load it quickly.

Always HPI if you don’t know the bike, its not fool proof but gives some protection

By the way
if you are going to buy a recorded bike ( and if repaired correctly should be OK) remember to tell your propective insurance company its recorded as they can get funny and may even refuse you insurance or to cough up 'again' on a recorded machine in the event of a claim, in any even tell them.
And be realistic on valueing the bike,dependant on the catogry its worth about a third less.

walk away reasons

I have been looking at Gs1100's and last night had reason to walk away

first the forks were leaking as rust was showing through the chrome slider
the bike was covered in rust, one of the front indicators were broken, the tax disc was missing, the mot was out, despite assurances that it had 12 months, all this and the seller assured me it was in good condition

can't beleive no-one's mentioned this.

squat down at the front or rear of the bike and align the 2 wheels by eye - while compensating for tyre width.

that and a knocking engine / box that jumps out of gear would be my only walk aways.

but different people have different perceptions of what they want - or can do to fix things.

service history doesn't worry me a jot, for instance.

everything else is quickly fixable and dependant on price.

I know this is an old-ish thread, but I'm new to the forum and am trying to find answers to the same questions - what to walk away from and what reason for walking?

I reckon I'd pull off fixing a knackered gearbox - even the microfiche looks practically as clear as a Haynes rebuild guide.

I reckon I'd spot duff brakes, rust, bent frame/misaligned wheels, leaks, bogey paperwork, a "this just doesn't add up" owner/bike profile, most of the obvious stuff - maybe not, and I have certainly been stung in the past when I thought I knew what I was doing - but my concern is what the cost of any of these repairs/replacements might be?

After finding what seems to be a good 1100GS - BMW luggage, alarm, Baglux cover & tank bag, low miles, replacement secondhand gearbox at 24k - at what seems to be a great price, any repairs could negate any saving over having gone for a more expensive bike.

Of course, the fact that this gearbox has been in the bike for over 20,000 miles and has been sweet (as far as an 1100GS gearbox can be sweet), according to the current owner, should mean that there's nothing to be concerned about.

Where can I get a listing of the prices of replacement parts?

Local BMW dealer will obviously ask top dollar, so where else?
