just wanna put my bit in... i was also at this auction and saw this said 800. at first glance it looks ok, i had a look also under the radiator and sure enought, oil all over it with dirt stuck to it, so i checked the near side of the engine rocker cover and sure enough, its bee leaking and not fixed propperly. There also was a strange click and wobble fron the front wheel, this indicated to me a bearing. the side stand was IMO worked but leaned over more than my other two 800's. I dont know the owner nore to i know how it was treated but from what i could tell it had a hard life, every body pannel did have marks on but this also happens in auctions.... i was looking at it to bid but didnt due to the price being way over what this particular bike was worth.
I was there and saw the bike with my own two eyes and this is my description. sorry if it offends but the truth shouldnt be held back.
cd01uk I think if you look back through the posts you'll see I made a point of not covering up the leaking Gasket. They all do it. In fact they tend to do it more when ridden at motorway speeds. Mine had been fixed/bodged by BMW 4 times previously. The side stand did lean over a lot but I put this down to a lot of sidewards play in the joint that attaches to the bike. It never took a knock unlike the nearside footpeg. I'd pointed this out. I've no problem with the truth which is why I PM'ed people with all its faults, warts and all.
I'm not sure what people expect a bike panels to look like after 35000 miles but when they've only had clothing and tank bags rubbing off them they will hardly look like they do when they come out of the showroom on day 1. There are plenty of photos on here documenting what the panels looked like in the final days. Which would be better? leave the gasket as it was or clean it thoroughly so there was no evidence of a leak? BMW would prefer the latter and as it was not my bike to sell and only BMW would benefit I felt I'd be serving my fellow GS'er better if I made them aware of the issues.
What is it with non subscribers and auctions
something for nothing

and still they moan

Cheers Puma. I'd love to know what this "hard life" is? To me a BMW schools bike has a hard life. Extreme panel damage, engine being ragged, dropped many times in all directions, air intake deep in water. My bike had none of that. It covered some distance for sure and I'd dropped it probably 5 times in its whole life. To me I'd called that fair usage.
Just a question who have you pissed off to draw so much incoming fire?
No idea mate but they are all London based, non subscribers
They should know though that a lot of 800's have the leaky gasket problem and I have a suspicion that there is an expectation from some prospective BMW owners that the bike should be immaculate. I saw a 1200 rider stressing over the fact he had a tiny 2mm stone chip on his fork

. I think this is the measure of the beast. Would I have paid £4.5K for it? probably not. I didn't think it was worth that but then the market decides what something is worth. All the things that were wrong with it were consumables that you can pick up from
motorworks for very little. Brake pads are only £16. Bearings again if needed are cheap as chips. The gasket would be covered under warranty. A lot whinging from supposedly seasoned bikers.
To the naysayers, GSer's use their bikes while BMW club owners polish them with cotton buds and leave them in the garage all winter.
(Apologies Simon, I know you have a 1200 but at least you use yours and its seen more than one continent

)
