Cafes, coffee stops and favourite greasy spoons in Wales

Great breakfast at the Halfway Inn in Pisgah just a few miles east of Aberystwyth. Just check on opening days and times before you visit. I believe it’s Wed to Sun 10am till late from now to late summer.

These are the people that got turfed out of Devil’s Bridge Two Hoots cafe after decades running it.

Best Welsh breakfast we’ve found so far 👍
That's a great road through Pisgah, turns into a mini TT mountain section for a short while!

Permanently closed , I believe.
Up for sale for almost a year. The Britannia Inn at the bottom of the Pass is closed and for sale too. Times are tough in the hospitality business.

The cafe at Lake Vyrnwy next to the RSPB Hide has closed too.

Thunder road CMC Bridgend. The upstairs cafe, Lilly’s is pretty decent. Closed on Mondays.

I very much like Aberdovey . Here carpark for Penheilig Arms Hotel 2023

I stayed there many years ago (~2006) when it was a fish restaurant. At the time I was covering galactic mileage around Britain and hotel stays were very (far too) frequent. The Penhelig was one of the best hotels I stayed in; the food was wonderful and the room I stayed in was really comfortable and spacious. It was an independent at the time but looking at the menu now it just looks like another generic, standard template brewery owned pub.

not even brewery owned. Marstons sold its brewery interests to Carlsberg in 2024 and is just a McPub management company now. We have one of their McPubs on the edge of town in the old cattle market development. My son and I had lunch there once as it is close to the train station where he was heading to. Not gone back. Their lease expires next year and I am hoping something less generic takes over.

It was stunning, apparently Rick Stein rated it as a fish place (plaice?!) back when he was a thing. I found it quite by accident as my planned hotel for the night in Aberystwyth was a dump so I left that and ended up in the Penhelig. It’s always a shame when a brewery gets their claws into a pub and start dictating terms.
McPub, I like that. I’ve seen McDojo but never thought to use Mc for crappy pubs.

if you go around to the main beach in Aberdovey, there is a great fish and chip shop. Walker's, opposite the entrance to the car park. They do a small portion of hake and chips for just over £7 which is a perfect lunch, sat on the promenade watching the idiots from the nearby Outward Bound Centre faff about. Depending on the route I take it is 75 to 120 mins from me so one of my regular outings from Welshpool.

Walker's still have cod but they are encouraging people to switch to hake due to over-fishing of cod. Hake has a different texture and flavour but I am happy to have it as a substitute.
