Calais, Epernay, Nancy, Vosges, Black Forest then Eifel before back to Calais

Great photos Snelly. About time too. Been over 24 hours and no sign of you until now. You must remember to keep posting rather than selfishly enjoying thissens.

:D

Good dinner last night when we found a nice place in Basel called Gifthuttli. We were initially booked into the Trois Rois Brasserie but left after 20 minutes - pretentious and up its own arse with a cry-wanking narcissist for a restaurant manager. I told him as much but cry-wanking didn’t translate all that well. 😂

Black Forest today. Arrived at the Titisee, and it was nice enough although the town at the end has a few Blackpool vibes! Very busy but not a single person swimming. Mrs S and I changed that. Like she said, it’s not often you get to swim in a sea of titties!😍

After that, great roads through the Black Forest and an epic lunch stop at Hexenlochmuhle. The nearest village is Schlagberg. It’s well worth a visit and an idyllic spot.

Spotted a few decent trout in the river too.

Now at the Rebenhof and it’s very nice indeed. Off out for a few beers in the village. Good trip so far……

Lowenbrau beer garden in Baden Baden - very good.

Also, we did the thermal spa in the town today. Highly recommended.

Some on here could learn a thing or two how to plan a holiday from you two.

Great time in Baden Baden. We went to the museum of modern art this afternoon then climbed up to the castle. Really recommend the latter to anyone who visits here. Views are sensational and there’s no health and safety so you can actually get a good view from the top of the keep.

Here’s an obligatory bike shot in the vineyards plus a view of Baden Baden from the top of the castle:

On to Cochem via Koblenz tomorrow. Forecast is for over 30 degrees for the first few hours so no bad thing that we’re hooning up the motorway for a while when we set off.

For what it's worth, we stayed at the Rebenhof last year. They don't like English people. I wouldn't stay there again.
How was it for you?
We stayed there a couple of years ago and it's one of the places I would cheerfully go back to.
Lovely spot.

Delightful. Lovely room, nice staff, excellent food and in a good location. Our only complaint is there’s no bar but it’s not really an issue as you can just sit on the terrace and the staff are fast and attentive. Very nice all round and I would definitely stay there again. 👍🏻

6 countries and 1999 miles in 9 days. Not a drop of rain. An excellent trip. Will post recommendations and places to avoid later.

Recommended:

  1. Hotel le Chantoiseau, Chaumont-sur-Aire, east of Epernay. Rooms are fine, restaurant excellent.
  2. Restaurant du Prieure, St-Quirin, east of Nancy. Incredible cooking
  3. Restaurant Gifthuttli, Basel - best Schnitzel ever.
  4. Hotel Rebenhof, Baden-Baden - nice place and nice welcome.
  5. Moselland Hotel, Cochem - decent enough. No air-con though.
  6. Onkle Willys restaurant, Cochem. Very nice lunch.
  7. Hotel de la Poste, Bouillon - nice place to stay and beers outside the front in the sun.
  8. La Taverne de Duchenot, St-Omer. Very good mussels for lunch
  9. Restaurant Hexenlochmuhle, Black Forest. Absolutely gorgeous setting and decent grub.
  10. Restaurant - Hotel Panorama, Route de Linge. A beer with a view of the Vosges.
But the best is this one - Boulongerie Mio in Thierville-sur-Meuse. Possibly the best patisserie I have ever been in and they serve coffee. Easy place to stop at if you’re travelling into Calais. It is so good. The food was fab. I had an open sarnie, pictured below, and Mrs S had a warm croissant filled with melted cheese and ham. Pics below.

Places to avoid.

1. Brasserie Trois Roi in Basel. I don’t think I’ve ever visited a more smug, pretentious place than this. Part of a five star hotel, this has some good reviews so we checked it out. The manager (an elite level arsehole) clearly thought we weren’t his usual clique of clientele. A good thing, given it mostly consisted of Chinese finance guys, over-ordering and making an infernal racket, along with tables of preppy, Harvard type septics, discussing their latest banking, misery causing deal and pretending to understand European culture and wine. Awful. After being largely ignored at our table by the staff, we left. The manager asked me to pay for the water we’d had but instead I just told him he was a cry-wanking narcissist and that I was going to go and find his boss. This I duly did and gave a very apologetic hotel manager and his assistant both barrels. Thankfully we found a super restaurant around the corner and the delay in their service meant we missed a passing thunderstorm!
2. Brasserie De Kollebloeme in the main square in Ypres. Dreadful meal. A real shame as the setting is lovely and the restaurants either side seemed pretty good. We took pot luck and came unstuck.
