Wapping Alert - Calais, Epernay, Nancy, Vosges, Black Forest then Eifel before back to Calais

Welcome.

One question. I noticed in your routes you sometimes use a lot of ‘hands’ (points you must go through, which you’ll keep being sent back to if you miss them) and fewer of the teardrop ‘shaping points’. Any reason?

One comment. MyRoute recommends placing a ‘shaping point’ every three miles / five kilometres, to help to pin routes. If you are a gold member of MyRoute, this is easy to do, using the expand function. But take a bit of care using it. See: https://www.ukgser.com/community/threads/the-expand-function.396964/

One suggestion: It’s a good idea to place your first point of the day, not where you’ll be starting from. Instead, place it say a mile or so along the road you know you’ll take to leave. Why? The device used to run the route, will know where you are standing with pinpoint accuracy, it doesn’t need to be told. What it does need to be told is where to next. If, as suggested, you place that point a mile or so away, it will give the device somewhere to aim for; it will take you there. More importantly, the route will then run automatically from that point onwards, with no intervention from you. This works very well. Give the point (it will by default be a ‘hand’) a name you’ll recognise. I use: LEAVE.

You can also do the same thing after say a lunch stop, by inserting a ‘hand’ along the road you’ll take, calling it something like: LEAVE LUNCH. This is useful if, for some reason, you turn off your device, as it will give the device somewhere to aim for after the lunch break.

I use both methods and they work reliably on assorted devices, including MyRoute Navigator on a phone and Garmin devices.

Hi. The only reason for the hands is because I built the routes in Basecamp where they have only a few waypoints. When I imported them into MyRoute-app, the platform created the hands, not me. I imported them so that they could be viewed by others but I won’t be using them for navigation.

Thanks for the update. It looks like you are all set. Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks to you. Lots of the routes are stitched together elements from the French Michelin map you recommended. 👍🏻

When i went I thought it was awful absolutely zero character and full of Chinese folk at breakfast!

Im staying at hotel Rebenhof this year, a few miles out from Baden
For what it's worth, we stayed at the Rebenhof last year. They don't like English people. I wouldn't stay there again.

Super news - thanks.

I will report back

Route amended for Ypres @Wapping - thanks for the advice.

@jtb - please share your Teutonic anti-English experiences of the Rebenhof. I am there for two days and it is not cheap. If I am going to end up having a massive row with the Bosch then I would rather avoid that scenario and change hotels whilst I still can.

Day 8. Bouillon to Ypres. We now have more time on this section so any advice on optimising this route for roads or interesting things would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hope the map pics are clear enough to read.
Tyne Cot is well worth a visit.

for the first (or last ) stop close to Reims in Champagne can recommend this place. Hotel is pretty basic but the food is amazing. Taking the Mrs there in a few weeks time for a long weekend. Its a ''Table Distiguee'' on the Logis website!
I see you decided to try this place as first stop.
We are there now. Rooms is small and simple but for €80 for 2 it’s not bad. Area is beautiful. New area for me as well. Tomorrow visit to Verdun war memorial and then heading west through Champagne country towards the coast and our second culinary stop before heading through Belgium back home
The restaurant is tops. Food was outstanding and you can chose the “level” of menu. We went for the 5 course. Not cheap but the restaurant is well worthy of its top classification of “table Distiguee”
Food was incredible!!!
Highly recommended!!

Thanks for that. Were actually in the sister Logis hotel about three miles away but are booked in to this place for dinner. 👍🏻
