Hi folks

Today I phoned Moto Works to order an updated cam chain adjuster as mine sounds awfull, especially when slowing down, ('03' 1150) only to be told that according to other customers' feedback, it has made no difference:eek: .

Has anybody on here changed the adjuster, and has it made any difference?. Mine does sound "orrible":nenau

Cheers

The noise will probably be from the left hand one.
It's an easy job, if you do a search you'll find a pictorial guide of how to do it from the American ADVrider site.
Then use 20/50 mineral oil if you're not already.

Oh, and it does make a difference but perhaps not always

Did mine a few weeks back, and it certainly did the job for me. Mine was not excessive, more a lot of rattleing on start up while the old style tensioner primes itself with oil. Its only the LH one that needs doing, but definately do a search, as the ADVrider method is a little long winded and other guys on this site have posted some excellent advice.:thumb

Did mine a few weeks ago. Relatively easy, relatively cheap. As to whether it is quieter, I'm not too sure since I wear ear plugs all the time.

One thing I should point out, is that on the initial start up it took two or three minutes to prime itself. During this time I had a job to keep the engine running.

Regards to all,

Whats that got to do with a cam chain tensioner ????. :nenau

it's primed by oil pressure, which only takes couple seconds.

Beware BMW dealer parts listing!

I fitted the "modified" adjuster about a year ago, fantastic difference within two second of first starting and hasn't rattled since (+20/50 oil).
Friend of mine wanted the same and duly went to the dealer, ordered the parts and fitted them. He phoned me later to say he had difficulty in pushing the tensioner body far enough into the engine to engage the threads and it was quite tight to screw in (mine had been finger tight). New parts were removed and I found he had been given the new body but the old, separate, spring and plunger! Took them back to the dealer who checked his system and was adamant that they were the right parts! Took my old parts in to show and it was obvious the shoulder in the new body prevented the old plunger from compressing enough to fit.
See this thread and make sure you get the "new" parts!(Shown at bottom of thread). Plunger and spring are integral with no oil groove!

I know it's primed by oil pressure - but the modified design is quite different from the original ones - much smaller orifice. I can assure you mine took a couple of minutes to sort itself out. However, it has been fine ever since.

'One thing I should point out, is that on the initial start up it took two or three minutes to prime itself. During this time I had a job to keep the engine running.'

Phil,
Did you disconnect the battery whilst doing yours? As Steptoe says, its just a cam chain tensioner. Mine primed in about 5 seconds, but the engine started and ran as per normal. And it is so quiet now:thumb
Just be interested to know why it did what it did.....

No I didn't disconnect the battery when I did mine. I really don't know why mine was reluctant to run when I first started it up, my initial thought was that it was the LHS fuel injector. I checked that and it seemed OK so ran it again and after two to three minutes the engine started to run smoothly on both cylinders.

The conclusion that I came to, possibly erroniously, was that the chain tensioner was taking a long time to pump up.

Anyway, it's been fine ever since.

Regards to all

I did mine a few weeks ago, got the parts from Motorworks who were very knowledgeable about the problem and delivery was very quick. Not difficult to fit but it I find it is not a complete cure i.e it still rattles slightly when cold, but good when warm. I use Rock semi-synthetic 20/50 oil. As someone pointed out this is the third version of tensioner to come out !

I did mine before Christmas.......easy job and got rid of the rattle. Priming on mine was almost instant.:)

Well I've just ordered one from Moto works........ and there out of stock :blast

Not my day today... just ran into the back of someone, bloody ABS and snow
