Advice please.

Not sure yet but might need Cam and Followers for a 106k 1150.

If so where is the best place to get them.

Have checked and adjusted tappets and rocker arm settings, and it may be a bit quiter.

Not had a look deeper into the head yet.

When the bike gets HOT it seems to make quite a racket, seems to be coming from the left hand side (as sitting on the bike).

Engine is fairly quite when cold.

I have seen the threads on Cam follower wear, but this seems to be almost a knock not a rattle

No bad running or lack of power.

My 1150ADV is on about the same mileage - what year is it? Have you got the upgraded cam chain tensioner on the left? That's a thing to check easily but you've done well to get to 106 with the old style. That makes a knock/slap noise, especially when hot.

The cam followers make more of a loud click than a knock. Motorworks would be where I would go. I'm going to do mine soon too. Should only take an hour or so.

The throttle body bearings make a rattle noise when old, especially on tick over but you can just put your finger on the cam where the throttle cable engages to check those - it will go quiet immediately.

Noise

Was running with 10/40w during cold winter but have been on 20/50w for about a month now.

Same noise seems to be there which ever oil used.

Thanks for the reply.

Its a 2002 R1150GS

I was wondering about the cam chain tensioner.

I think it has the original.

Am I right in saying its the one that goes in from the top and if it the old one its 17mm and new is 15mm.

Am I correct, I will need http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=6&Q= ENA56922 and http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=6&Q= ENA88629.

Anything else?

Sounds right. The 2 tools I reckon you'll need are some bent nose needle pliers to get the old tensioner bottom section out, and one of those ratchet head spanners cos it's really tight in there. When fitting the new, I put downward pressure on the bolt (against the spring, in order to catch the thread) with a screwdriver levered on top of the bolt as you turn it.

No doubt others have other useful tips too:thumby:

I used a piece of stiff wire bent into a hook shape slightly too big for the inside of the bottom tensioner section. Force it into the bottom section and it grips it allowing it to be pulled out.

I found that a shallow angle combination spanner used upside down allowed me to get to the head of the new tensioner. I didn't have a similar spanner for the head of the old tensioner so I customised (ie put it the vice and leather it with a lump hammer to bend it) a deep offset ring spanner :thumb

Fold a tie wrap/zip tie in half a use that to get the old part.

Cam chain tensioner only noisy when you start up until the oil has circulated. New tensioner stops this.

Really noisy when hot is most likely followers - amazing how such little wear on the follower can create so much noise!

Ticking sound usually throttle body shaft wear and there are "bodges" available but new shafts and bushes are the only real way to sort it.

Done all these on my 1150 GSA and its worth doing right.

There is a knock when hot on 1100/1150 engines fitted as standard :D not the most mechanically quietest engine!

Its noticeable at idle when hot and picks up if you blip it and knocks on the overrun, cure is earplugs !

Other cheap cure as already mentioned is left timing chain tensioner
