Hi all,

Recently pulled the cam & lifters out to see if they were worn as per Steptoe's suggestion(valve gear noise on LHS)

Sure enough lifters are done for:

LHS cam doesn't look too bad however, it has wear marks on it but no real pitting/damage like the lifters have

Should the cam still be replaced if I am replacing the lifters, or can the cam still be used?

Cheers,
Nic

Post a pic or two of the cams?

Are you seeing "wear marks" or just a difference in colouring? Unless you can actually feel the edge of the "wear-area" with the edge of a feeler gauge or knife-edge - then I wouldn't bother renewing.

Al:)

I'm sure that Steptoe will confirm one way or the other, but I always thought that cams and followers should be replaced together, especially if there is so much damage to one or the other.

Heres the cam:

Only reason I didn't post it in the first post is because the photos of both the cam and the lifters make it look much worse than they actually are

There is a very slight wear surface on both lobes, can just see it on the LHS lobe in the picture

I'd be changing the cams too. :thumb2

You appear to have pitting on the surface which ain't gonna improve with age - that's for sure.

Alrighty, looks like new cams it is...

Second question then, unfortunately 1150GS camshafts don't seem to be too common around this side of the world, I've had a look at part numbers and all the valve gear is the same across the 1150 range, the cams however aren't

BMW # 11311342961 is for the 1150 R/GS/GS ADV

BMW # 11311340963 is for basically everything else 850/1100/1150 & 1200C

Anyone know the difference between the two? I'm presuming its just going to change lift/duration for slightly difference engine characteristics, despite this are they interchangeable?

Thanks for all the help!
Nic

Just a word of warning- not sure how deep you have looked into it..

If they do fit, but are different lift etc. you will have to change both.

Be carefull tho, as there may be a collision possibility between the valves and pistons if the lift is higher.

Good luck

I sure you can order the correct camshafts / parts for your engine via the nearest bmw dealer, theres no substitute for the correct engine parts :D

BMW M/C parts

G'day Nic, here is the number for Southbank M/C's
1800 888 057. I have found them a lot cheaper than the local stealer, I save a lot even after paying airfreight, if you need parts.

Regards

Cheers! Might give them a call and see how I go! :beerjug:

Have you owned this from new ?

I would be looking at the type of oil you are using and length of time between changes.

Pitting is usually caused by sub-surface stress due to overloading- causing the top surface to delaminate - ie pit.

Good quality oil should prevent this.
