I have just had 4 new cam shafts and 8 followers replaced in my 5 moth old GS1200LC - Anyone else had a problem as BMW say this is the first one. Can it also damage the valve heads?

How many miles as the bike done? Did you notice a problem or did the dealer spot it?

I took it to my dealer when all of a sudden a metalic tap started at around 4000 miles. They said it could be some relief valve on the left pot and that the new LC's have produced "enquiries" about noise. They said it would be fine but they would make a note to check it at the service in 2k. When I set off on the holiday the noise increased and I could even feel the knock through the bars and it was embarresingly noisy - the German dealer sussed it in 5 minutes

They were replaced as the cam followers had eaten a 4mm trench into the cams. The cams are either soft or the followers too hard!

Sounds like a manufacturing fault

So who did the replacement ? the German dealer or the good ole Brit that misdiagnosed it ?

Think about all the swarf off the camshafts floating about in the engine!

Hopefully all the bits of metal are too small to cause a problem, hopefully! :)

we had one locally. loud knocking/tapping noise on the RIGHT side.

dealership replaced some parts which seems to have resolved the issue.

the cams rotate directly on the cylinder heads. There are no bearings.

All metal will cause problems in the oil, the metal particles will accelerate wear unless completely removed from oil Along with the cam work I hope a new oil filter and oil were done, I would consider a flush and do them again anyway

The German dealer and he did renew shims, oil and filter for which I was charged, as I was for a loan bike! My UK dealer si trying to get that back from Customer Services
