I've been considering getting a dashcam for my bike in case of accident/event but then starting thinking it might be cool if you could get one that you could also use as a go pro kind of thing just to watch back interesting rides. So my questions are:-

1) Can you get a dashcam that also acts as a general video recording device and turns on/off with the ignition, and when the memory gets full starts to overwrite the oldest recording first? Basically just something that you can install and forget about unless you want to see a specific recording.

2) If you can get the above can you transfer the files wirelessly that I could watch on my phone eetc or do they all record onto a memory card that then needs to be transferred to a computer?

3) Do they drain the battery, i.e. even if they're turned off with the ignition do they in reality just go to sleep rather than turn fuly off?

4) Are there obvious/favourable mounting points on a 1250GSA that make them as least noticeable as possible?

5) Are they easy to fit for complete novices in electronics?

Any advice would be appreciated.

1) yes you can
2)they can do both
3) they turn themselves off 30 secs after the engine turns off
4)you can get a fitting kit

3) very easy

Take a look at Innovv K7 or K6

I’ve got a Global Eagle x6 plus front and rear cameras had the system for about a year now works great. It’s possible to take stills.
Mine is wired through the canbus which switches off a few minutes after you turn the ignition off so won’t drain your battery.

Chigee AOI - 5 Lite does all that, front and back video. And gives you CarPlay and blind spot detection etc as well. Easy to fit. If you get the LIN-BUS control module, it also allows the use of the wonder wheel to control everything, lock videos and take still images, all with the wheel.

In addition to what @moody says above you can download the files via wireless but it can take some time and generally the record in lengths of 1,2 or 3 minutes.

Mounting wise I used to fix my dashcam to the right hand screen/front fairing subframe with a "X" of cable ties and the rear one to the underside of my rear rack.

There's loads out there to choose from that will do what you want depending on your budget.

That’s quite a big camera, I’d be looking for something more discreet and ‘hidden away’.

Thanks for all the other replies I’ll certainly take a look at those that have been mentioned :thumb2

Have a look at this one, the cameras are quite small and it's the one I have on my bike

Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out!

Its big because the problem is the quality of the picture. Its just not possible to get a decent picture down a cable, thin enough. Hence why this 'camera' is bigger as there is no cable to push the picture down (front camera).

Its why you will find most systems have lower resolution on the rear camera than the front etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think the INNOVV ones look like they might be the best option for me, I'm thinking the K6 might be a better option. Although the resolution isn't as good it doesn't have a separate DVR and GPS unit so I assume takes up less space.

Has anyone got the K7 and if so have you managed to hide the DVR, GPS and remote?

I have a K7 on my GS. The DVR is under the rear seat, the GPS module is inside the left hand panel (the one similar to the battery cover but on the other side) and the remote is on the l/h mirror. I wanted to be able to use the remote, rather than hide it, so I can take a still picture or make a file secure.
