Camille's big rebuild

loads of bits went to be stripped today :thumb2 so we can get on with the cleaning of the motor and gearbox now:clap the only issue i've had and maybe someone of wisdom on here can help. The HPN cardon shaft is being a right royal pain in the arse. the top nut that holds the drive spline came off with no real issues but can i seperate the spline piece, like hell can i. i'm guessing its threaded not sure which way but i think its a clock wise cos that would make sense. The issue is gripping the bloody thing, with the UG in a vice i have no way of gripping the splined end with enough grip to turn it. Any ideas.:nenau

Mr Pepperl is a nice guy at HPN, give him a call.

syco i will give you the benifit of my knowledge despite your comment on the cost of my bikes .your driveshaft is nothing special just long the end drive bell is fitted with a taper they all were in the early days if you take it to a bm dealer thay will normally try and grip it in a vice and beat the shit out of it with a big drift . i have a special tool to part these. i may be new to this site but i have been building and tuning these since 1989 and i also know klaus very well in fact i think i am the only person in the uk with a trade account, we talk very often and share infomation so i know all about your bike if you know what i mean !

thanks rich.

i spoke with mr pepperl yesterday and the tool he described was something like a bearing splitter, i tryed one yesterday and broke the tool. i may have to use heat on the splined cup to see if that would work.
by the way i wasn't having a go, i think your bikes are stunning. i was just taken aback by the price. i know things like the pistons arn't cheap as i've had pistons made by omega. Fred hadley did me some works ducati jobbies that were reshaped on the crown for my TL thou and i had arrow make some special rods in Ti and the crank was skimmed and reballanced to suit, not a cheap job.
anyway i'll get back to trying to split this shaft.:thumb2

well what you trying to say

does it mean its going to be even less original now you're removing the 'original' paint..... :augie

on the basis the frames been paited over in places where the original coating has come away and the swingarm has been coated red instead of white i think i have a duty to put her back to as close as original as possible before rust eats away at the frame.:thumb2

Absolute bitch of a job to get the engine out on your own with the starter motor, timing cover and cylinders all in place. I'm impressed. I bet your back aching now :comfort

FFS he's a young lad of course he managed:eek

I took mine out with the gearbox still attached, cylinders and starter still on, I just took the front and starter cover off, it was quite tight and reasonably heavy. I don't think i'll be putting it back in one piece though:augie

Pheew! The gauge got up to 12 tons of pressure before it split the drive shaft - sounded like a shotgun going off once it finally split. Unless you have access to a heavy duty press I doubt you'll do it. Definatly an argument there for fitting the later, chunkier, swinging arm with the relatively easy to remove drive shaft.

lucky bugger

still no joy with mine. that said i started shot blasting the engine today with baking soda, not doing a bad job. should have it finished tomorrow so will post some pics then.
on the press front, how did you grip the spline cup so you could pul the 12tonnes of pressure on it. a photo would be good:thumb

I had to press the splined cup down into the swingarm. It's put a crease around the swingarm effectively buggering it fortunatly it was a spare so I'm not too concerned. Crap design though. The 81 on was a serious improvement.

I can't do that

i don't want to damage the swingarm so i'll need to find another way. have to say as well baking soda shot blasting rocks:thumb

been busy today

been soda blasting, had a few issues with the bicarb clogging but just meant i had to be less like a bull in a china shop:blast, anyway the done bits look loads better and my skin feels refreshed and well exfoliated:eek:
anyway heres a few photos, look at the pick at the beginning of this thread to remind yourselves what state the engine was in. tomorrow its the turn of the gearbox:thumb

Sycomoto grand job she is looking sweet, really looking forward to more pics as they come along.
We nearly have all the parts for Lilith’s Rally Airhead so this is good reading!!!
Have you got a gig for the mono swinging arm to be extended?

Looking very good Sy..... Keep the other 25kg as I know of another big tank airhead that needs a good cleaning......:D

i've a jig and a good friend who's brill with a welder. if you want one just send me two standard swing arms and i'll send you back a long one:thumb2 you'll just then have to find about 600sqid for the hpn drive shaft:eek:

I have a jig for the mono swingarm but you only need to use one arm.to make one arm from two is not a good way of doing it you will end up with far more problems. I also have long shafts and a supply of new genuine bmw uj;s that i can fit. you will also need a special shock.

Camille is a Twin Shock :augie
