On my Zumo 660 this summer ,around Europe, why is it that , under POI's/Lodgings-, there is only a long list of Hotels, and no separate folder for Campsites ?
If I then type in Camping or Campsites, it will show a very small number of options.
Surely, on a motorbike sat nav, Campsites should have their own Folder/category?

My pals Zumo 550 has a Folder for Campsites, so what's going on ?

Also, why don't the Hotels or Campsites show just a little more info, eg 2 star, or 3 star etc ? When looking for sites or hotels it would be a big help..

Using 2012 Europe mapping by the way.

Probably because it's screwed up much the same as the Fuel search is. I have the same result as you on my Nuvi 765t as well, using 2012.2 mapping. My StreetPliot 2720, with 2011.1 mapping, works as it should offering the options of various lodging types including Hotel/Motel, Campground/RV Park, Bed & Breakfast etc. This also works in Mapsource for both versions of the mapping. Which, to my eye, points the finger at an issue with the firmware for your Zumo and my Nuvi. I'm on the current release and complained to Garmin about the issue. Garmin Europe were quite proactive, the recognised that there was an issue and escalated it to head office in the US, since then I've heard nothing

You could download and install the POI file on this page, post #298, about half way down the page.

Thanks Bumpkin, I'll see what sense I can make of it - Garmin are so complicated with all their software gubbins. I run a Mac , so will see if the file opens in Base Camp, as Road Trip is utter shite, and Mapsource won't run native on a Mac; needs other software to be able to run Windows stuff. Gets far too involved !
I have however, just upgraded POI Loader, so that might help.

OSX 10.6... ;)

Just tried it in Basecamp for PC, it opened the GDB file but trying to save it as a GPX file crashed Basecamp :(

Mapsource took a few seconds to save it as a GPX

If you don't have any luck you can download the GPX file here. This is the later expanded version with over 30,000 sites so something of a bonus for you :) It's over 1MB compressed, so give it a while to download.

Hi Bumpkin,
that looks brilliant, and certainly has some of the more obscure campsites, including one we just stayed at in Croatia. So, providing POI Loader doesn't play-up, we should be in business. Opened in BaseCamp on the Mac OK.
Final thing though - will POI Loader place it in with "Custom POI's" in its own folder, or will it dump it in with the "Lodgings" POI's ? Really want a separate "Campsite" folder.
Anyhow, many thanks for the info -I really need to go on a weekend course to get the best from my 660 !!! Probably get lost finding the course though.......

Have a look at this post.

POI Loader will add your POIs to a category called 'Extras' in the 'Where To' menu on your GPS. It should then list 'Custom POIs', selecting this will show your POIs. Or if you've loaded them in folders as in the post linked to above it will show you categories matching your folder names, in these will be the POIs that you placed in the folder before uploading to your GPS.

Of course I'm working on the assumption that POILoader on the Mac works the same way as on my PC, I would expect it to but you never know...

Does Mapsource now work on a Mac with OSX 10.6 installed?

No, I was commenting on the fact that I had sight of his OS version, that's all. Only way that you'll run Mapsource on a Mac is with a Windows emulator. If Basecamp is functionally the same on PC as it is on the Mac then I'd say that you have no real need to use Mapsource.

Done & dusted - has loaded the "campsite-europe" as a folder into my "Extras" folder. Seems to be all OK, but hard to be certain as it doesn't seem possible to, for example, enter a distant European city as destination, and then try to find POI's close by.
Many thanks Bumpkin - big problem appears solved !!!

And YES, BaseCamp works fine under OS 10.6 on an Intel Mac- in fact I think there is an update due. Only prob with BaseCamp is that it tells you it has sent .GPX file to the device (660 ), but it lies - no data shows up. You have to expeort as data if I remember correctly - very strange, and VERY Garmin ! They make an artform out of making seemingly straightforward things into a rigmarole. They need to talk to Apple .......and someone take Road Trip out and stand it against a wall and shoot it !

'Where To' > 'Near' (at bottom of screen) > 'A Different City' > 'OK' > type, for example 'Rieti' (central Italy) > select 'Rieti, RI' > 'Extras' > 'Custom POIs' > 'Accommodation' (if you've set it up with that folder name?) > 'camping-europe'.

You should then get a list of nearby campsites.

Impressed - what more can I say - how come I don't know all this useful stuff ? !!!!!
I'll of course give it a try, and endeavour to remember it for future use.
