I seem to recall that the Zumo may not be able to play iTunes files.

What's the fix?

was last year when I did it but i recall You have to save them as MP3 first. you can use itunes to do this making a copy of the original. then copy it to SD card from the music folder.

IIRC there is somewhere in iTunes where you can convert the file format. Edit>Preferences>Import settings?

I always download all my purchases from iTunes as MP3 files to give me maximum flexibility.:D

Just tried it, as mentioned above, you have to change import settings first to mp3 then save. next you highlight the song you want and in advanced tab there is an option to save an mp3 copy.
Once you have done that, search for your itunes library in explorer and from there you can send the newly created mp3's to your sd card.

Hi Greg. I have had this "problem" in the past but have just got my proper laptop back off HID with Windows 7. Yesterday I discovered Windows Media Player gives you a "Rip Format preference" to allow you to copy CD's in MP3 format.

I have tried and failed with fekkin itunes and if I can help it will never touch that annoying, frustrating insidious programme ever again.

So, if you can do without itunes, are as useless and impatient as me on a computer use Windows Media Player.

Thanks guys - your words much appreciated.

This isn't for me but for a friend who has just acquired a Zumo 660 and he uses an iPod/iTunes.

In that case just run the ipod through the Autocom ( I'm assuming a lot here aren't I) . Set the ipod on shuffle and secrete somewhere safe and dry..."job's a coconut":thumb2

It's a lot of hassle having your music in 2 different formats.

Less hassle than having to charge the mp3 player, have another lead from the autocom.

All assuming the 660 actually will actually find the mp3 files ok

Go to the Music library in your iTunes programe on your PC.

Right click the song in itunes that you want to convert to MP3. Left click on the words 'convert to MP3' and itunes will create a separate MP3 version of the same song and list it in your Music library immediately underneath the original version of the song. Do the same procedure with all the songs that you want to download onto the zumo.

Then minmise your itunes screen to half size.

Connect your zumo to the computer with the media card installed in the zumo.

Open the My Computer icon on Windows and you should see your Garmin card listed as a removable disk.

Minimise the My Computer window so that you can see both the itunes window and the My Computer window.

Drag the MP3 versions of the songs you have created in iTunes and drop them into the Garmin removable disk in My Computer screen

Disconnect the GPS from the PC. Put the backcover back on. Go to the Media Player program on the GPS and you should find your MP3 files there.

there's probably easier ways to do it but this works for me

I forsaw this problem when I first started with iTunes-didn't want to be stuck with just the option of playing my music on an apple product so right from the beginning I chose the option to save/rip the music in mp3 vbr. Quality my be a little different to aac files but I cannot tell the difference even with my shure headphones, most things will play mp3 files.

Continuing this theme, could anyone please post a snapshot of what an .m3u or .m3u8 file looks like.

I'm trying to create playlists on the Zumo by exporting them first from itunes. I can export the playlist, but I understand that, using a text editor, I need to edit the playlist file in order for the 660 to read it.

Thanks

Thanks Andrew. Gonna give it a go. :thumb

When I'm preparing music for my Zumo I use a free download called MP3Gain to keep all the volumes at the same level. It save the annoyance of volume levels being too low or two high on different songs.:aidan

Andrew & all, I've had same problem and have followed your advice but when I right click on a track in my tracks in my iTunes music library there is no 'convert to MP3' option..

Baffled now...

Ooops...I lied! I still have the following problem and would be forever grateful of a solution.

On Friday I bought a Sandisc 8GB SD card. I can't get my PC to see it. I've used the adaptor that came with it directly into my card reader slot on my PC, and by inserting it into a remote card reader via a USB lead. Also, when the card is in my Garmin, My Computer sees the Garmin and lists an additional drive M but when I click on it it says 'Please insert disc into M drive'

The SD card works fine on the Mrs' laptop.

Any ideas gratefully received...

you have to go into preferences (that's what it's called for macs. windows prolly calls it something different), and change the input format.

can't find it at the moment, but give me a minute...

edit: hope this is the same on itunes for windows or you're using a mac.

it's under the General tab in iTunes Preferences. probably Settings or something in windows. click Import Settings and change from the default ACC to mp3. OK it, close down the Prefs window.

you should now have the option to convert to mp3 in the right click context menu as described in previous posts.

i think :)

Hello mate, long time no see. Hope you and the Mrs are in good keeping...

I've found the @MP3 Convert' option, but can't get my PC to see the SD Card...

What MS operating system are you using? I used to have appalling problems because I was on WinME and that couldn't see any SD card which was SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity), i.e. capacity more than 2GB. Shouldn't be a problem if your USB drivers and software are all up to date though.
