Hi all,

Having just changed from a R1200gs to a g650gs I found myself wondering if the can bus charger will work on it :nenau I was told by the garage (BMW) that the electrical system is the traditional type.

Have tried a search on the forum but got nothing to say yes or no.

Thanks Steve

I maybe wrong but I thought the feature of the canbus charger was it told the canbus port/socket to stay open whilst charging. If you dont have canbus sureley it will just work as an intelligent charger and cycle your battery.

Well first off I am surprised nobody has come up with a answer to my question is it can bus or not.

I put my can bus BMW charger ( its about 7 years old, not the latest model) into the auxiliary power socket and powered it up. Note, on purpose I did not have the ignition on as is the practice on can-bus systems. On the charger the power light illuminated and the 1/3 light came on just as it would on my 1200gs. The error light never came on. So far so good. I then put the ignition on and held it on so if it was a can bus it would keep the socket live. The system was left for a few hours and reached 2/3 but it was getting late and I didn't want to leave it on overnight.

Today I powered up the charger and went through the same procedure and it now sits at 2/3.

I suspect the electrical system is a none can bus type purely on the way the charger is behaving. If it doesn't reach 3/3 then it backs this up.

Tomorrow I will be linking my sat nav direct to the battery and putting in an additional power socket for the cockpit. I will try out my conventional charger and see how that does on the battery.

So anybody out there know for sure which system is on this 2014 model G650gs.

Yes, it will work fine, it just acts like a traditional trickle charger, safe to leave on for extended periods.

N.B. I have one that I have used on my Ducati and Beta but I don't tend to leave any battery on charge for long periods of time as i personally think its better to let the battery cycle a bit. Personally i put them on charge for 24 hours once a month just to top them up.

Others will probably disagree but it works for me.

Info for all, that old chestnut "when all else fails read the instruction manual". So I did as I still have the can bus charger manual. Yes it is good for lead acid batteries. The micro processor recognises the type of battery and changes the charge procedure to accommodate it. It then settles into the maintenance mode once 1/1 and1/2 cycles are done.

Thanks for those that have gave input, this thread now closed.
