Hi All

I have an 02 1150GS and the rear shock is now leaking slightly after 55,000 miles.

I would like the extra height of an Adventure so was considering replacing the shock for an Adventure one. So, can you help with these?

1) Will the Adventure rear shock fit the Std frame?
2) MUST I, or SHOULD I, replace the front shock at the same time? Do I have to use an Adv. front shock as well, or can I keep the Std?
3) Is there anything else I have to change, to make allowance for the extra height in shock? like the side stand?
4) Is it worth using a low mileage second hand shock?
5) Where's the best place to get one from?
6) Is there an alternative?

Your advice please.. ;)

Scud,

The front shock should be replaced as well as the main stand and sidestand. Apart from that :mmmm the rear shock goes straight in. Probably far easier and cheaper to fit a std rear.

I seem to remember somebody writing that the GSA drive shaft was different but I cannot remember who it was.

If you only replace the back the handling may be "interesting" & you will need to replace the other bits ar Rob says so it will be a quite pricey mod for an inch more height. It's up to you tho' - many of us seem quite happy to spend ££££££££££ on modding our GSs' :D

I also researched this when my rear shock failed, (it failed due to a suspension guru not being a guru!).

I checked out the exploded parts for the 1150gs on http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=47979
and found that the adventure has a different rear drive shaft p/n. Physiclly if it is different or not I dont know, but I would suspect that it is longer. If you keep the standard shaft and longer shocks, there may be less of the male shaft inside the female tube (no comments there!) this may cause the rubber of the female part of the tube to wear out sooner.

If you can either afford or get a drive shaft from a wrecked GSA that would be best. If you do fit it yourself remember about drive shaft phasing - it DOES make a difference

Scud, if you go ahead with this, I might be interested in swapping centre & side stands as I'm about to go the other way (oh er missus :ymca ) and change my adv shocks for some shorter ones.

For your info' I've just changed the shocks on my Adventure for standard 1150 length. I found the Adventure side stand is still OK, but (big but) the centre stand certainly does need changing for a shorter one.
