Touratech Side Panels
Bought mine at the Touratech Travel Event 2011 at Niedereschach in their sale for £100(dear enough at that mind)
Check out Touratech on ebay as there were a couple of pairs of new side panels for not much more than £100
In their defence they're really nice side panels and they tidy the bike up(like they should be there) and you do get a wee aluminium knob instead of the huge handwheel for your non ESA suspension
Oh and there's a hole for your power socket aswell........!

The way forward is not to think of them as being two silly bits of plastic. See them as the work of highly skilled designers/engineers that were translated into two precision-machined injection mould tools that were then used to create two silly bits of plastic for which demand is relatively low. If you want one milk crate, it'll cost you £20K. If you want 20000, they'll be around quid each! In the end, it comes down to not that many punters wanting silly side panels.......

Absolutely, it's economies of scale. I work for a company that designs micro processors. To make one test chip costs tens of thousands of pounds. Once someone makes one of those chips a few million times the price per unit is less than a pound.
No it's not, it's marketing.
If you can make them for £10 and people will buy them for £100 why would you sell them for £20?

I'd have to disagree that they do nothing..they prevent a lot of muck from hitting the rider/panniers/bike....
