can you quieten a Remus

I bought a Remus titanium for my Xchallenge a couple of years ago, I like the looks and the fact it runs cooler than the standard one, but it is a bit too loud. Has anyone ever packed an aftermarket exhaust. I just want to take the edge off the noise a bit?

I have the aluminium remus freeride. As supplied it is LOUD, dont even think about removing the "baffle", what a joke that is. I made mine quieter using the baffle from an Akropovic silencer for a KTM. Sorry but I can't be more specific than that, my local tuner had it lying around his workshop. It was a tight interference fit in the end of the can - heat can with a torch and beat the insert into position with a copper hammer. No way it is ever going to come out.

Assuming you have the removeable insert with your silencer (and it is stainless, not Ti), you need to track down an 8" length of stainless tube the same diameter as the inside of the insert. Weld it to the front of the insert. Should give a similar effect to my Akro baffle.

Cheers, I've put up with the racket for a couple of years but I'll get it doctored while it is off for the mot. A little bit of encouragement is what I needed, I let you know how I get on.

steel drills don't work on titanium rivets.........

I was going to dismantle the pipe and re-pack it with looser material and perhaps open up the centre pipe a bit to let more noise into the packing. As you can see that didn't work.

I then remembered that the spark arrestor the "big gun" pipe on my old XR650r used to muffle the noise. I couldn't see spark arrestors on the Remus website so decided to try my own...

Its seems to work quite well and has lowered the tone a bit. It is only £1.99 Halfords bodywork mesh, so I'll replace it with stainless mesh if it blows to bits. I can't see it being any more restrictive than the cat on the standard pipe?

If you get the length and angle ot the extension tube correct you should be able to weld it onto the end of the current baffle without dismantling the silencer. Just remove the baffle and weld the tube on the front.

However if you have had the can for a couple of years it may be due a repack (depending on miles). Remus advertise that the silencers never need repacking but that's rubbish. First time I did mine it was completely empty and now repack every 6-9 months (5-8k miles). I hear it first on the overrun but by the time I am aware of it much of the packing has already been blown out the back. Once there is a void, the gasses start circulating around the packing it goes quickly.

I'd be surprised if the rivets are Ti as it is probably too strong to use in pop rivets. Most rivets are aluminium with a steel pin through the middle. Use a fine nail punch to push the remains of the steel pin through into the can, then use a 4mm drill on the rivet. With a bit of practice I can now get the job done in about 40 minute. Remove can, drill the rivets on the end cap, gently tap the cap out using a scew driver leaving the perf tube in the can. I use a length of plastic drain pipe to pack handfuls of loose packing (silentsport) around the tube. Refit end cap with standard 4mm rivets.
