Bugger! There's me just having bought a Wudo bracket and the real answer has been sitting there all along

I'm getting very tempted by this idea. Is there any way of painting, or otherwise treating, the cat - they look bloody awful in their chrome finish - they'd look better in black IMO.

In fact, whilst I think of it - has anybody had any experience of ceramic coating? Andrew (Aurelius) had his downpipes done and they end up looking like brushed aluminium - but didn't suffer from discolouration. Could this be done to the entire system as CC has fitted?

Edit - just found a picture of Andrew's 1150's headers...

Mike:)

Mike - I'm in the process of doing something similar with mine just now. My downpipes and y-piece are at the sandblasters today, and when they're done I'm going to spray them with a black ceramic spray paint. This stuff:

https://usautomotive.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=221

I'm lazy and never clean my bike - now I won't have to worry about my nasty pipes! I hope.....

I'll post pics at the weekend when it's all done.

*edit* also - these guys do ceramic coating:

http://www.camcoat.u-net.com/Exhausts.htm

I got a rough quote from them for the job and they were talking about £75 ish - Seemed fair but I decided to do it myself. */edit*

Can't see any reason why not :nenau

The only issue I can think of is the paint / ceramic coating making it difficult to re-insert the pieces back together because of the few mil extra diameter. But looking at your pic - those ceramic coated downpipes would have had to have been slotted into what Aurelius has down there (cat or y-piece) - so it can't be too much of a problem.

I'll let you know how I get on....

Just a wee report from the weekend of use on the Isle of Skye with me "U" bend....;)

It worked fine with no probs at all...

Those riding behind me said that it was all but silent...much quieter than the Carbon Can and 'Y' piece

The paint didn't fair so well though, became mottled and discoloured....despite allegedly being for Exhausts.

I'm going to get it anodized to see if that does the trick..:P

Any one out there got a nearside fullsize pannier off the likes of a RT going begging.....?

CC

CC, Just wondering what cat code plug are you running with the set up?

I have the 'Steptoe' ;) setup and it has realy improved it.

One thing I have noticed is there is hardly any enging braking now compared to before. I will have to keep an eye on the brake pads. :D

WEEEELLLLLLL wot can i say

Hi guys just done the removing the silencer and putting a slash cut on to stop the rain
1st i was awestruck at the difference in the mid range
2nd the noise is only slightly louder :D
3rd the change has saved me the cost of a sebring system :bounce1
4th this is permanant (maybe i'll change it to be more in keeping with bmw image :rob

Please can anyone point me to a suitable end-pipe available on-line. I tried our only local car shop and all the end pipes they have are the size of beer barrels.

Thanks

Any exhaust place can knock one up for you, they will be able to get it just how you want it. Better if you can get s/steel or paint it, otherwise heat, damp and mild steel =RUST. ;)

Lots of the boys in the US on www.r1150r.org have done the same with theirs (they call it a 'canectomy') with seemingly no ill effects. There's a long thread running called something like 'the can is off!'.

I've tried it with mine too for a week or so, but prefer the look of my eBay'd Remus end-can & without the cat. It's not too loud, provided you have the cat...

I found a replacement unpainted stainless cut-pipe on eBay for a tenner from a seller called kitchquality, though he doesn't seem to have any listed today.

Pipe.

I used the stainless link pipe off a mates crashed Thundercat-just trimmed it down to the length I wanted. Whatever you use, don't bother trying to drill the cat and screw or rivet, you'll just break lots of drill bits! Use a clamp off the y-piece you've probably just taken off.

Began to get ready for this over the hols by removing the silencer to measure internal and external dimensions, assess angles etc but ground to a halt at the first step, removing the silencer. Accoriding to my manual ( GS1150 2002) the heat shield is separate from the silencer and is retained on the outlet pipe from the cat in some fashion that I cannot determine from the drawings. However, upon loosening the silencer/cat clamp and releasing the pillion footrest mounting it became apparent that the heatshield is somehow one with the silencer and will not allow release of the silencer from the cat. So how do you free up the silencer? Do I have to remove the rear wheel?

Any help much appreciated.

Hiding behid the sofa in case Tarka replies and I haven't done all my homework properly.

Hit it with a Big Ammer using a peice of wood as a drift, they are tight the first time. The heatsheild is part of the clamp that holds the silencer to the Cat.;)
Just gone outside to take this....

Judging by those pics, they changed by model year, my 99 had 3 dainty little clips on the cat, which cracked through so they changed on later models.
I find that the "noise" changes, When running with no Silencer but with the cat, when hot and run hard the cat cleans I guess? It is then noisier and when cooler again it calms down, anybody else heard this?

The yanks also do a "Canisterectomy" but this isto do with there funny emission laws the bikes have a charcoal canister to absorb emissions which is a vark up generaly.

Welsh :rob :D :D

Thanks. My fitting turned out to be per Finglonga's pic and it freed up fine once I worked out what was what. Can't believe the weight of the silencer - what a lump. Now just got to find a stubby end pipe.
