Done a quick search and nothing really covers the problem.
Have an 09 1200GS since 2010. Nothing new, electrical, fitted to bike in last 5 years except a new battery in 2014. Usually all's well but this summer after over night ferry came to bike and battery dead flat, nothing left on but needed to get off the boat. Luckily carry small set of jump leads in tool kit so easy start from wifes GS. next few 1000 miles no problem. Been ok since then. About a month ago off for a ride and battery flat, been in garage about 2 weeks, wifes 1200 started as normal so jump start and off we go. after a 100 miles or so fuel stop and noticed the GPS still on, dash all off but no message saying GPS lost power etc. Back home and quick check shows socket still live after 5 min in fact stayed live until I disconnected battery. Cycled ignition on and off several times before hand and reconnected battery a couple of times but socket still live.
Left battery off overnight on charge and re connected next day all seems fine. Made a small test lamp out of Hella socket and bulb holder to easy check if switching off. Over a month now and all ok powers down like clockwork after 1 min. Went to NEC last week and got back cold and late so never checked the socket. MOT today and sure enough battery flat and can bus still powered up:mad: Just spent an hour checking all wires etc and even with just the battery connected but still powered up. Can bet in the morning when I reattach battery it will be fine.
Any one come across this sort of thing. found a cure? or am I off to dealers for a test of ECU.
Thanks.

Garmin gps cradle has been known to screw up and keep the system awake. If yours is a garmin I would look there first.

Use a relay connected to battery to power Garmin and Autocom if you have one fitted, then take relay livefeed from a can bus power source.

Garmin is through the usual plug so will give it a go. But been on since I got the bike and its a 660 cradle unlike the 550 no real electrical stuff just power supply to unit.

Yep disconnected the Autocom stuff and even battery. If I reconnect just battery still powered on. Problem is you can put money on it when I reconnect battery tomorrow all will be good. Do have experience of a new LC not powering down and that went to dealers who reset the ECU to factory settings. That bike has been ok ever since. Wondering if that may be something I need to do.

Garmin is wired through the standard under clock plug. All my autocom and radio is through the Autocom switched relay. That has direct battery connections and trigger wire from under seat plug. Only wires on battery are 2 wires to Autocom relay http://chainspeed.co.uk/autocom-fused-relay-direct-battery-connection-2437/ and another couple for the battery charger wires so I can plug in charger.

FWIW I run a Zumo 660 cradle from the front BMW socket beneath the beak on my 2008 GS and touch wood I haven't had the same problem.

As you imply, it could it be that your software is corrupt for the power socket, or needs a revision installing by a Motorrad agent ?

Have a search on the cradle thing but it is more involved than it just connects for charging. Anyway it is something screws up and not a general they always do it. If I remember right it is the 660 that does it as well. A search will reveal all and costs nothing to test.

The empty cradle of my TomTom draws enough power through the socket under the headlight to stop my canbus shutting down 1 stop out of 4. No idea why it does this and if the bike was to be parked up for more than a week I had to pull out the plug to disconnect it. Eventually the constant removal of the plug broke the wiring at the socket so I ran a cable to the back of the aux socket and wired the cradle into that with a switch to isolate it when the sat nav is not in use.

All of this is steering me towards a Givi smartphone holder and Sygic maps on my Android.

Off topic but a smart phone with correct software and waterproof case makes a lot of sense.
Obviously it must have the maps fully installed. Online maps are not reliable enough.

I use Sygic and have full Europe and load the countries onto the phone as I need them. Fantastic satnav app, I've been using it for years.

Do you have an alarm fitted to tthe bike. The BMW alarm on my 08 GS failed and I had exactly the same thing of the the electrics not powering down when the ignition was off. This included the dashboard still being lit-up with a display. Had to disconnect the battery to stop it runnning flat. Alarm removed from the bike and all was well.

Thanks for all the reply's. Think I'm going to move the autocom relay from underseat socket to the diagnostic plug feed. Also going to add a small micro switch to the Zumo mount feed so I can isolate it. Then keep an eye on it. Trouble is it's so intermittent may be another month or too before it happens again.

It has been known for the canbus to get confused if the battery is a bit low and not turn off the sat nav mount as it thinks the mount is a connected a canbus charger.

Sounds like a possible Steve. It is a very intermittent problem but sods law say it only happens when I need the bike.. As I mentioned in original post nothing has changed electrically in last 5 years re adding bits and this only seems to have started this year. Going to break into the GPS feed and add a micro switch to isolate it once ignition off or not using the GPS, watch this space..

My old sat nav cradle was the cause of my bike's electronics staying alive after the ignition was switched off - battery would go totally flat after about 3 days.
The 12V-5V regulator circuit in the sat nav cradle would 'feedback' 12V (probably from a big reservoir capacitor) for just long enough into the bikes power socket after switching off the ignition - the bike then thinks it has a charger connected and keeps the bike's electronics alive and flattens the battery.
Once I realised what was going on I simply unplugged the power connector to the sat-nav cradle - end of problem :)
