Oil level

I had the same problem when I first got my gs 2 months ago I couldnt work out if there was any oil in or not so I phoned the dealer and he told me to get someone to hold the bike over opposite the side stand and sure enough the level came into view although above the maximum it's bright silver and easy to read don't know if it's meant to be that high but I have had no problems. Boo

What year bike is it? earlier models have a plastic sight glass that goes opaque if engine gets too hot, can you see sight-glass metal backplate? You should be OK to re-use compression washer if you haven't messed with it before. I'd drain 500ml max out of it and let level settle. Unless you've really overfilled it, you will see a level then I'm sure.

Tipped away from the stand as suggested and it's all good. Slightly above max but as said probably just the relative heat today compared to last week.

I've ordered the kit to do an oil and spark plug change at the weekend so I'll be able to be sure that the level is correct then.

I do know what oil to put in so don't worry I won't be asking that

When you measure out the exact amount of oil required and fill the engine with it you'll find it'll cover the oil sight glass. Don't worry about it. Just get on riding it.

FFS leave it alone before you do something stupid You don't even know if it's full or empty

When did you last put oil in? When was it last serviced? Was it Ok yesterday?

The oil levels can be temperamental so if it's showing slightly overfull just leave it alone as NOTHING will happen. Go for a long ride, leave it on it's centre stand and I bet a pound to a pinch of shit it's normal tomorrow.

My rule of thimb is as long as it's showing something in there, don't worry

Tip the bike right on its side, to see if oil appears in the sight screen. Genius.

Luclikly I have never read the owner's manual, so would have missed this Top Tip. Cheers, biker mates. This is a great forum

As already mentioned here. I was told this by a BMW tech:
Bike on center stand.
Engine on.
Slight rev's till it gets to 2 bars on the oil display
Turn off engine.
On side stand, confirm oil is present thru the oil glass.
Back on center stand.
Watch the oil level grow and stabilise
