Carrefour fuel pumps warning

Thank you Richard.

I’ve looked at Barclays card yesterday as recommended by Martin Lewis. However I am not eligible for it.
Following my wife loosing her job last May and not being able to gain another until early December, and my workload last year not being as I was hoping, meant that we had to use some savings as well as our credit cards to pay the bills etc. this naturally has affected our credit scores, not least as being married, this does link us both on our credit profiles.

I can see and sympathise with your problem. Annoying but “Computer says, no”. Try Halifax, whose rules might be more soft touch. Or go to your bank and explain that you’d like a second card, only as a back-up when travelling. I often find a face-to-face request is better than battling with artificial intelligence.

Having a spare card of any sort, kept separately, is really helpful. I have actually lent mine to two bods when away. One fellow lost his card at a payage barrier, whilst the other (I think) left his at home by accident. Similarly, I mislaid my own travel wallet once. I froze the cards via the app’s on my phone and used my spare cards. All was well, not least as the French hotel contacted me by phone, saying their cleaner had found my wallet on the stairs. They kept it for me for a couple of months, until I went back past the hotel’s front door. The cost? A minute or two freezing the cards and EUR 20 to the cleaner in cash, when I went back.

Unfortunately “computer says no” here too.

I have been lucky I guess, apart from loosing my house keys as a yoof. I’ve never lost my phone, wallet or keys. That be right pain in the backside if I was to loose all three at same time. 🤣

I've lost it two years ago in France.
Blocked all the cards and came back to Rome using the Amex on my phone, then blocked that too.
I was staying abroad another month or so.

Monzo and Amex* sent me replacement cards to my parents' address in Rome straight away.
HSBC doesn't send you cards abroad or at a different address. So much for the "world's bank". :D :D :D

*misplaced that card multiple times, once or twice at the checkin for the Eurotunnel back in the days when you had to hand over the card :D , they always send you a new one very quickly.
Monzo charged me, but it was expected and I'm ok with it (free tier account).

Try one of the ‘No credit check’ card companies, advertised on the tube, It doesn’t really matter if they charge for overseas transactions or if the interest rate is large, as it is only ever used inna real emergency. Even just a couple of hundred of credit, would be enough to get you out of immediate trouble.

I think the Post Office offers one, or try say:

MSE (Martin Lewis) this is my only option*

Which is as you say, ideal to get me out of trouble, should I need to and with (here is hoping) healthier credit limit for those pesky preauthorised fill up at the PFS.

*anything obvious that you can see and suggest that I to avoid this card?

Their reviews seem to be top notch on trustpot.

Apply for a separate card from a different bank. Most will dish out a suitable card for free, using nothing more than an online application. I got a Nat West credit card (no fees and some cash back) for my 90 year old mother for her holiday in Madeira. On her return, I simply used an app to close it, until it’s (hopefully) needed again.
I thought of that, but basically never got around to doing it. I only need it as a back up if I lose my main card.
When I rang the bank they said to put my card onto my Apple Pay thing, then if I report the card missing and report it some magic happens and the card on the phone works after 12 to 24 hours.

That looks perfect for your needs, EV.
Thank you Richard.
Went with it.
£1200 limit not entirely surprised to be honest.

£1200 isn’t allot but sure is better than a punch in a nose.

I can always draw cash from my HSBC GM card or First Direct account.

It then become a virtual card with a different long “card” number.

Essentially any card you already have, in Apple Wallet it does become a second (back up) card.

Good. That solves the problem then (y)

Welcome.

£ 1,200 for a back-up only card is pretty good. It will get you hotel rooms and several tanks of fuel, easily. Likewise, it will get you home on an aeroplane, in an emergency.

Hopefully, you’ll never need to use it. That said, it’s sometimes a good idea to use the reserve card, just to keep it ticking over. Some card companies withdraw cards if they are not used occasionally.

56 days to pay back, which is handy should an unfortunate need to max it out does occur, meaning I can take essentially a couple of months to repay it.

Yes, I have had a credit card accounts closed in the past without my knowledge, only found out when the latter had landed on my door mat.

That reminds me, must use my dormant Barclays credit account to buy something, just to keep it alive.

Just using the card and paying the bills clicks up credit points on your credit score

I remembered to use my old Virgin card today, tucked in the knee armour of my Rukka trousers. Used to be my main card when I banked with them but just kept as a back up now. Zero fees abroad. 20 euros of fuel bought to Keep the account live for a rainy day. Just need to make sure I don't lose my trousers.

I used to have a few cards as the banks used to just keep throwing them through my letter box and raising limits, eventually I sent a couple back and lowered the limits as I never got close to them - like £15k limit on a card I typically put a few hundred and month on, and maybe a coupel of grand when booking a holiday.

Now down to 2, one from a "joint account" (actually in my name, but Mrs has card attached to it) and my own, so far never had an issue with payment holds, and no idea of my limits but bet it is £5k - £10k per card, enough for a lot of fuel station holds, and then the "joint" and personal current account cards.

So solo I have 2 x credit (one Visa and one MC) and same with bank cards, and I like to hold over 100 euro's of cash at any one time in case of issues with card systems, at least I can get a couple of tanks of fuel and some food.

Only issue I have had in the past is cards blocked due to being used abroad - but back in the day I used to inform my card company where and when I am going on holiday and they would still block the damn things!
