Cast Wheel Conversion ....The Facts!

Having just completed a cast wheel conversion on my 03 non abs GS with a lot of help from this post I thought I would share the details of the cost etc.

I bought the 1150R rear wheel new including new MEZ4 from R Series Parts on ebay for £150 they waived the postage since I also bought 1150R rear footrest hangers, the wheel came with disc bolts which I used as the spoked wheel ones are shorter
I bought the front from a private vendor on ebay who was breaking a 53 plate R1150R who also thew in the 2.6 speedo drive for free, cost £132 inc post,it came fitted with an almost knackered Michelin Macadam so I ordered a new MEZ4 front tyre for £74 inc post.

Discs all bolted straight on.

Rear wheel went straight in and bolted up using original bolts with extra washer on top of the cone (thanks for the tip Den).

Front wheel and speedo drive went straight on but the front mudguard looked pretty poxy so I dropped it by about 20mm using a couple of 1/4 in drive sockets as spacers with longer bolts,I mounted the lower stays onto the torp caliper bolts,I enlarged the holes in the stays to take a metal spacer and bolted them up with longer bolts with a washer to hold the stay in place,I then cut about an inch off the front of the mudguard,it now looks much better if still slightly high at the front.
I haven't ridden it yet as I am still waiting on the new front tyre to arrive.

Well I have just made this conversion quite some difference in the handling faster turn in made the bike lower which is a plus for me as I'm short.

What tyre pressures are you guys using with this mod at present Iv gone for standard GS pressure ie front 36psi rear 42 psi as most of the time I'm 2 up.

Over all i like the look :D:D

Not sure if I'm breaking any rules offering a for sale here, but it seems relevant to the thread, I have a K1200 rear wheel for sale in good condition £75, hundreds £s cheaper than new. Dave.

I'm picking up a bike which already has this mod, and has a K1200RS rear wheel.

Does anyone know what the rim size is on this - 5" or 5.5" ?

That'll help me decide whether to get a 160 or 170 section tyre.

Cheers.

I think the K1200RS has a 5 1/2 in rim which can take a 180 or 190 section.

A 160 or 170 is ok on the 5 in rim, the R1150R came standard with a 170 section on a 5in rim and it looks no wider on the bike than the original 150.

The bigger section tyres may look better but are likely to make the bike less nimble through the bends.

warmshed I am interested in wheel PM me please

If you use a wheel from a K series bike, the brake disc will need to be mounted on a carrier plate, as there are no mounting lugs on the wheel itself.

Cheap as chips from motorworks though... also means that you haven't got to remove the caliper when taking the wheel off. Much easier:)

EDZT,I'm new here and do not seem to be ablee to PM you, if you need to get in contact please call me 07515 737203, Regards Dave.

Hi All
Really interesting reading, but can someone please help me clarify what alloys to stick on a 2005 GSA 1150?

Ive read the thread and am unsure about possible disk size differences etc.

Would really appreciate specific wheels / types if anyone has done similar on a late GSA 1150 please

Thanks

Your easiest solution would be to talk to Motorworks as they supply complete kits - they do seem like very helpful people when I have phoned them.

I have a r1150r rear wheel, that has the mounts for the disc, is it possible to fit it to a bike that has the disc mounted on the bevel drive, bought it for my 1150gs, but would possibly like to fit my r1100rt, so I can fit some 17 inch tyres :augie

I suspect that if swap the disks off the spoked wheels to the alloys, they will fit. I would try that route before selling the set of alloys you have....
