Hi Guys
Great post, but bloody hell I'm now so confused.
Firstly I have a 2000 850GS. Main use for it is winter bike, and therefore wanted easy clean wheels. (and weight saving would be a bonus with it only being an 850)
So, I've managed to find an R1100R 3 spoke front wheel, and an R1100RT 3 spoke rear wheel which also has a reasonable 020 on it.
Now I believe the rear is a straight bolt on jobbie, but do I need to use the tin shim that has come with it? I seem to remember my RS used to have the shim.
Some do & some don't, need the shim. Mount the wheel & line up the brake caliper, then decide based on whether things line up ok. Wheel alignment is not an issue to worry about.
And it sounds like I may need shorter bolts or put thick washers between the head and tapered washer? Is there any reason why I shouldn't grind the surplus off instead?
You can certainly grind off the surplus, but buying secondhand bolts from Motorworks is cheap enough.
The front!! Now I have the wheel, it seems I also need the discs from the R as well? I'm still looking for a speedo drive as I know I need the correct one. But what about spacers? Do I need R spacers or re-use the GS ones?
No special spacers needed, just reuse your GS ones. The discs are definitely a "must" though. Only the 10 spoke versions accept the std GS discs, so get some secondhand R1100R discs & fit those. They have the added advantage of being fully floating, rather than semi-floating like the GS ones.
Is there an alternative 3 spoke wheel that can use my existing discs? Not really looking to go for the later 10spoke wheels, there too expensive for what I want it for, and it sounds like theres only a few that use the speedo drive which I do want to keep.
