Cat with no can

Having felt the weight of the standard can I just had to get shot of it, following idea posted by others of just running the cat straight to air. I don't have a friendly local pipe-bender to make me up a cosmetic/rain-proofing end-pipe and the ones in my local Halfords would only look appropriate on rod-rods. Found a guy selling stainless pipe on eBay and he's made up this one for me. I sent him the dimensions, he made up a test-pipe in mild steel and then the real thing in stainless. Fits a treat and cost me £25 inc p&p (inc test pipe). Here's his address if anyone else fancies it:

Have done about 1,000 miles now. Sound is very nice (& can't be too offensive since I leave for work at 5.30am and no comments from neighbours so far). Weight saving is excellent of course! Best bit for me is that it has significantly filled the flat-spot that I had around 3,000rpm. Others have mentioned an increase in noise once the cat is hot & I think I get that too, although marginal; I also read about loss of engine-braking & again I think I agree but again marginal. Other effects are a very positive impact on 'road-profile' for filtering on M25, and a very slight popping as you slow to a halt (ie in 1st gear only - wierd).

I did wonder whether I would need to refit the heat-shield to avoid scorching my boots but in my case at least that hasn't proved to be an issue.

Had no problems at all with heat although I did try the heatsheild on there and it looked....Er......Vey odd! If its not causing problems I would leave it as it is.:thumb2

Here is the bike with the mild steel test-pipe fitted.

Oh and with the pillion pad missing where I hadn't attached it properly before a ride ........................ if anyone has one going begging I've got a Wanted thread in relevant section ....................... (Any condition - I'll butcher it to attach a stowage box).

Not planning to risk it at MOT - less than 2 minutes to put the std can back on.

This is much nicer than the halfords tail pipe i put on, which is a fairly poor fit. I may well order one of these as well.

That pipe looks good - might just get one.

How do you think it would handle a full size pannier on that side. Would the exhaust gasses be directed away from it suffuciently to stop it melting?

Yes they are no heat issues at all. But the lower mounting lug is in a different position to the pannier with the cut out for the exhaust.

I agree with fingalonga but because the guy I bought from is making them up to spec you could ask for the tail to be a bit longer and a bit more angled down if you wanted - just ping him an email. I'm not connected to him at all but I must say the service was top class

Hey guys, not trying to put a damper on things, but I was in my local BMW shop today and the mechanic guy told me about a dude that had done this mod to his bike. they had to repair it -engine was totally fcuk'd. Holes in pistons etc.

This may have been a one off, I'm a louder the better person so good luck to everyone. I have to say it looks sweet! :thumb

This is a little worrying. i have had this mod for about 6 months and it has been fine until recently, when the bike has developed a misfire, most noticeable in 3rd at about 3000rpm.. I have been told to check the coils which I will do and I have also put Fuel Injection cleaner in but I am hoping its nothing more.

Sounds great though.

How long ago was that? Which model....

So is the Cat/No can set up likely to be any more damaging than a Y-Piece/Standard can?

There's a few reports of holed pistons with Y pieced bikes, but a only tiny number compared to the number of modded bikes that are fine.
