Honda have a big problem with these bikes.
Many new Hornet 1000s are losing oil.

Hey everyone, just got off the phone with my dealer here in utah and received some new information relevant to everyone. Apparently, honda acknowledges the oil consumption issue and is going to order a stop sale here in the usa. In February, they will issue a recall in regard to excess oil consumption resulting in engine damage. Definitely seems like a chicken and the egg dilemma, i think based on my own personal engine issues it was defective from the factory and that oil consumption is a result not the other way around(but as long as they fix it for free who cares i suppose). The fix is still up in the air whether it’s a rebuild or complete new engine. I asked for a copy of this message so if/when I receive it i will post that as well. He said he needs to doublecheck that the internal document is okay to share. Tough because my engine was found defective in October so playing the waiting game to find out how long it will take to make right. Happy Honda is going to do the right thing about this and it could always be worse at least it’s not a 24’ zx6r with almost two years of do not ride orders 😂

The new CB1000GT/CB1000F are delayed till at least June/July 26 whilst Honda try and sort a fix and looks like many Hornets will be getting new engines when the problem is sorted.
And it appears they are stopping sales of the Hornets, at least in the US and A.
I may well cancel my CB1000F order as can’t be arsed to wait if I don’t get it before next summer.

I read hints of this a few years ago from those who had said that the original Fireblade engine it uses 'used a bit of oil'. Shot themselves in the foot seemingly.

Buy a Honda, dead reliable.
I suppose using oil is not a reliability issue? Maybe. But most of us remember the chocolate camshafts (KTM currently have the prize for that) and regulator rectifier problems.
Tbh, I had two trouble free bike, vfr400 and vfr750. Both reliable but with awful gearboxes.

What a shame though. The 1000gt was looking like seriously good value. Modern machinery though, once run in, you should be able to ignore the oil between services.

My last 2 bikes have been Honda...done c 45k miles on them in the last 8 yrs...close to 40k on the Africa Twin and c 6k on the NT1100. Both have been totally reliable....I'm sure most peoples time with a Honda has been the same.

It's model specific though isn't it. I have owned a CB500Four, CBX550 and a NX650 all of which were great (the CBX did burn oil though) but if my only Honda experience had been the original chocolate cam VF750 I would probably have a different opinion. It is surprising they are having issues with what is in effect an old engine design, maybe a supplier issue with a specific component, it happens to all marques now and again

Yes..it is...my comment was in response to.."Buy a Honda, Dead reliable..."
My first comment on the thread was about this particular engine being known for using oil...back in 2016 or 17 when it was in the fireblade.

I bought a November 2020 ATAS in May 2022 with 2500 miles on it. I reckon it may have been run in a bit gently (glazed bores?) as it used oil on a reducing basis until about 15,000 miles. There is 33,000 miles on it now and I have always changed the oil every 5,000 (instead of 8,000). It doesn't seem to burn any now or blow it down any of the three clear breather tubes (which have to be checked and drained periodically).

The only mechanical failure I've had on a bike was a new March Delivered Honda CBR600FY the second year of the alloy framed 600 Honda's. I noticed it leaking oil from one of the spark well drain holes and brought it back to the dealer. The sparkplug well "O" rings had been incorrectly fitted at the factory and the oil starved cams at that side of the engine were scored. They loaned me a 1998 Steel framed CBR600 (lovely thing) with just under 7,000 miles on it which I ended up having for 6 weeks as they couldn't get cams as the spares had been bought up by race teams for regrinding (or so I was told). In the meantime during that April and May I had a tour of Ireland planned and one of Scotland. The bike was bought from Owens brothers in Belfast and Anthony Owens asked for the loan bike back to show it to a prospective buyer. In the meantime I'd put just over 3,000 miles on it in the intervening 6 weeks and he nearly went ballistic :D. He loaned me their CBR600 demo bike and I had my own bike back 5 days later with a completely new cylinder head as Honda weren't sure that the cam journals may also have been damaged :D

It's nice that Honda is resolving the problem now so the updated engine in the new models should be good to go. May as well leave the order in, unless you find something you like better that's available. Then cancel at that point.

Pain in the arse though, was expecting my bike 2nd week of Jan, now looks like June still better off to have it right, rather than have to give it back and they sort it, they are sticking with the trade price they gave me for the Africa Twin, so to me thats free motoring till the CB1000 Arrives

Has it been determined what the cause is?

In the next days the recall will be out world wide , due improper cylinder coat . Honda will replace the WHOLE engine , recall will apply for cbr600rr and cb1000 hornet .

And keeping the 650 or traded it as originally planned?

Can’t really trade it for the CB1000F if I’m no longer getting it !
So I need to sell 650 as garage is too full with 4 bikes and I probably won’t use it much now anyway .
Oh well…..
