I seriously struggle to lift my bike onto its centre stand. so much so that today is probably only about the fourth time its been used.

I have owned and used just about every type of airhead in the past and never had a problem.

Before I take it of and throw it in the skip can anybody make any suggestion other than chuck it in the skip. The stand that is. :D

Seriously ....

That wire thingy on the stand looks to be at awkward angle ? :nenau

Noddy - do you have standard length shocks on the bike? Is that the original stand for the bike , ie R100? Someone on here might know, but I seem to recollect that BMW changed the stand on one of the bikes of that era as it was a struggle.
It's possible that the stand has got worn where it seats against the frame "stops", and is thus sitting too far forward, but I guess that wouldn't make it so tough to get onto the stand, more in getting off stand. Have the holes in the stand worn oval (holes where the bolts go through to mount stand to frame)?
It does look like the front wheel sits too high in the air in the pics you sent in other post.
You could maybe try a stand off an RT or RS - they might work better, but sure someone will know.
When I shortened the height on the Ohlins on my 100 GS PD to be the same height as the original BMW shock, I really struggled to get bike on the stand, so I had a small amount cut out of the stand height, and re-welded, and works fine now, and requires only small effort, unless tank is filled right to the top, in which case it's a bit more difficult.

It does look bent. Are you using this to 'stand on' when you lift the bike ? I always put my foot on the end of the leg not the protruding arm.

Is the bike an 81?

Thats an earlier stand. The 82 on bike had a different stand. Yours looks like an 81 stand which is hard to find and may help somebody out. Motorworks have the standa s listed as 81 on which is wrong. You could really do with trying a later stand (foots different like the one below)

Thanks to you all for the replies and suggestions.

I don't use the wire thingy Captain, I do the same as Paul and plant my boot on the stand. Shockers are standard length Roger, and the stand and mounting points are all ok and not oval'd.

The bike is an 84 Rob, I will have a ring around and try to find a later stand and give it a try.

Feck knows what i was on when I wrote that first reply. Looks like I'd taken a gram of speed

It's you noddy...stand is OK. No other stand will be any better.
The stand on my paralever GS has been cut and shunted ( the bottom curved part ) by a previous owner as he probably couldn't master the centre stand either.
Maybe a small blob of weld on the top tang of the stand so it doesn't quite fall rearwards may help.

Both mine and my mate's stands bent so that they were hard to get back off but still easy enough to get on. I straightened mine and welded in some strengthening fillets and it seems fine. When the welder asked why they would use such a rubbish design for a stand I had no answer.

I have a brand new paralever stand in the loft for a low-exhaust GS

My G/S leans nicely on a milk crate, but I put the crate next to a kerb just in case it tries to slip out.
Ply sheet top and bottom of the crate too, it does duty as a seat when I am working on the bike as I dont have hoist.
Just as well as the centre stand is a pig to use - even the tyre fitter called me in to help him pull it up on to it.
Back wheel ends up about 60 mm in the air so a bit shorter would probably work.
And a longer lever.
Good design helps too , my 240 kg VFR was the easiest ever to raise, just medium pressure on a longish lever and the bike rolled back what seemed like a foot and popped up on to the stand almost on its own.
I have a VFR stand somewhere, promise myself that one day I will cut and splice the bottom of the legs on to the G/S stand, but there is always something more urgent which needs doing.
