Stay tuned for bush replacement on a 2004 R1200GS, just passed 70,000 miles... centre standy thing..

:friday

This is the rhs centre stand bush/bearing... looks like it was meant to have an internal thread which has long since gone.

I noticed a clonk/groan when putting the bike on the centre stand in the garage.

:blast

Probably cheaper than an FD replacement. :D

In my defence, the picture's a lot smaller on my phone than on the PC I'm on now... :blast

Ah...I see....

New toys!

Stay tuned long term 1200GS owners.....Yaaaarrrgh!

:friday

Most importantly: when refitting spring, check to see no impressionable children or persons of a sensitive disposition are within earshot.
I speak from experience. :blast

Can you estimate just how many times the centre stand was used during the 70k miles before this happened? :D

The centre spring mount onto the stand has a long threaded bolt. Fit the springs and wind it up. Easy peasy squeazy & thanks Mr BMW Engineer for fitting what should be obvious to other bike makers.

Spring puller? All you need is a handful of washers.

Please do go on...

Have you a diagram or are you thinking of a non 2004 model 1200GS?

:cool

Im thinking of a 2008 GSA but (stupid I know) thought they would all be the same. My old Yamaha had two stepped bolts on its centre stand which were a b'stard to fit. I fitted the spring and a bolt on one side The used a tapered podger bar to align the holes and fit the 2nd bolt. I was far more awkward than the GS (even without the winder bolt) but possible in the dark and no skinned knuckles.

Old bits:

New bits, £15 of your English Pounds..:eek

Meanwhile centre-stand has had a wash in preparation for a splash of Hammerite....

:thumby:

To pull those pesky springs down over the lug to give your now super firm bits the tension they need, just whack a fairly chunky cable tie through the loop end of the spring, then use a long lever (NB....KEEPING YOUR KNUCKLES WELL CLEAR OF THE FALLOUT ZONE!) to prise the cable tie loop/spring end down......putting full force on your leverage bar with a foot is the best plan, 'cos then you can poke the end loop of the spring over on to the lug with a large flat blade screwdriver :thumb

You will, of course, end up with a cable tie trapped under the lug and spring end loop, but ignore that.....just take a knife to the cable tie and trim it right down.....the 5 mill left immediately under the spring loop will work its way free and become part of the general road detritus :thumb2

The longer the lever through the cable tie, the more force you'll get (durr!) and more importantly, the more control to wangle that fucker over the lug :thumb

It's one of those silly little jobs that can literally bring blood sweat and tears, plus an hour of swearing and struggling, or just be over in 3 minutes flat if you step outside of the box and use a tiny bit of applied physics and lateral thinking :thumb2

Mine popped out the day it was booked in for its service at just short of 40k miles. Sorted at no extra cost. :rob

Before you remove the spring, fill all the gaps in the spring with washers. This stops the spring from shrinking all the way back.

When you reinstall the spring, put it on, then remove the washers.

I've never done this myself but heard it works.

Stand sprayed with some satin black Hammerite..... not exactly MikeP standar, but it's beer o'clock.
