I find the centre stand on my '81 g/s a PITA to use. I believe the g/s to GS stand is a recognised mod and makes lifting the bike easier? Can anybody confirm and if so, a bit of info please... I have access to a scruffy '89 GS stand but it - like me - is currently abroad enjoying in sunnier climes (sorry).
Before luuging it back to the UK I could do with knowing if the mod is feasible/worth doing and what exactly it entails. e.g. Does it use the same mounting bobbins? (I don't want to start cutting the frame about) Legs need shortening/lengthening? Any downsides?

I believe the best mod if you are having problems with the g/s centre stand is to fit the ST stand….slightly lower.

If you want a ST stand….. give me a shout.

Are you putting your weight on the end of the stand ( ie the longer piece that comes down from the frame and curves) or are you trying to use the piece that sticks out to the side ( this is WRONG, and will make it nearly impossible to use the stand)

Push stand down using the piece that sticks out to the side, then move your foot onto the end of the stand itself, apply downward pressure and pull up and back on the handle.

Or fit a ST stand…. Slightly lower, fits with no machining/welding….. I think you need shorter springs too.
Many who get too old to use g/s stand fit the ST stand….both wheels will be on the floor, but will work

Thanks for the replies Bub &, apologies for delay in coming back to you - am travelling ATM (not on the g/s). I'm not sure an ST stand would work as I fitted a slightly longer shock just before setting off on my travels and plan to fit GS forks at some point. Both of which will lift the bike a bit and should make the g/s stand easier to use and render the ST too short? But in the meantime, I have a tatty GS stand available that I'd like to try, just need to confirm that it's feasible.

Aha! There's a thread from somebody who did this back in 2016. It looks like it is virtually a straight swap, which is what I was hoping for. My tatty GS stand needs refurb so I might even get a padlock bracket welded on before painting. Thanks again for your input Bubb (blasted autocorrect)

I have the same problem with my 1986 G/S so i maybe interested in a ST stand .
How much shorter is it ?

I’m not sure exactly, but I can dig it out and measure against my g/s one.
If fitted to a g/s then both wheels touch the ground but it is easier to lift bike onto the stand.

I found the above to be the case. 👍

You will need to remember shorter springs.

I started a thread on this in 2020
