Chain recall thread

Just got back from Euro trip. Knew nothing about the recall.

When in Switz, popped into small BMW dealer to get a new pair of gloves. Couldn't have been more helpful. Tech came out to look at our bikes and mentioned recall, did a check and mine needed chain & sprockets.

Stripped down a new GS in the showroom to give me the parts and ensure the rest of our trip wasn't compromised.

Excellent service.

Mate's bike which was only a few chassis numbers higher didn't need the recall.

which dealer was this???

Recall GS800 CHAIN.

I contacted the Motorrad site, gave details, of my bike ,which is a GS800 July 2009 regestered, they informed me that my bike was due for the product enhancement for replacement chain:D
Although no contact from dealer I purchased the bike from to inform me of this, will book in for replacement asap.

Great work everyone, thankyou.

I am waiting to see if my bike falls into the catagory.

Strange how 2 weeks ago my local dealer, Riders in Cardiff, denied all knowledge of any ' chain Recall ' issues, and any chain problems at all on these bikes.!

So what chain have you got now the 2010 800s have a Regina chain apparently, have mine booked in for the recall but no mention of the brand of chain to be fitted ,bought the heavy duty DID chain a couple of weeks ago am wondering will i still be fitting it even after the recall.

Bingo !!!

Wrote a mail as Blobby suggested, got a kind response suggesting me to call BMW Belgium which I did, result is that my bike IS concerned!

New chain and sprockets due next Wednesday :thumb2
Incredible what I had to do to "probably" save my @.s :eek

Bike is from May 2008

I have just spoken to BMW and my bike, a GS800 is not affected however my wifes GS650 is!! :blast

If it is of any help to anyone making enquiries the defect code is

0000 333 700

which apparantly translates to drive chain/chain sprockets/ chain replacement.

Pleased you got an answer and a result. Sounds like you are having your new chain and sprockets fitted on the same day as me. :thumb2

Had a recall for my 2009 800gs, i had swapped the chain and sprockets a month before for a nice DID set up, asked the dealer if i could still have a new cain and sprocket kit to save as spares (well you have to ask) to my suprise they gave it to me as it had already been ordered in, i wont say which dealer incase i drop them in the sticky stuff but if your in the same situation try asking. its worth £180.

Called into Ocean today, Bill said he is just about to send out the recall letters. My bike (Aprill 08) does qualify so they want to do it ASAP..... so its booked in for June 19th!! Apparantly there is another GS called a 1200 that has a recall for brake hoses and they have 200 of them to do as well.

Thats odd because i was in exactly the same situation.... fitted dID etc... But my local dealer says i can have the did as a spare but to continue the warranty you NEED to have the recall work done....

Now does this mean that everyone who HAS fitted a DID chain has now voided some part of the warranty..?

Right then, my chain broke a month or two ago now, it was a bit dry when I took the bike down to the dealer but had been regularly cleaned / oiled before that.

The dealer and I disagreed about the state of the chain and in the end they paid for the parts and I paid for the labour.

If the chains were recalled before my chain snapped would I sill get a replacement?

If so should I be seeking to get a refund on the labour I paid?

It all depends on how anal your dealer is. when i changed to did chain i purchased genuine sprockets from BMW and had them rivit my chain on for me. I am sure if it would of affected the warranty they would of said so. chains are also a consumable item and depenging what your using the bike for would /could cause a need for replacement before the warranty period is over (desert riding etc)
Finally, I think the DID chain will be the last thing to cause me problems on the 800.

chain recall

I rang my dealer today in the south of Ireland to ask about my bike which is a 2008 model and they said they are in the process of sending out the recall letters so they booked me in on Monday to have the recall work done. if your living in the republic and have not received your letter give 'em a call.

thats very good advice Fireman :clap

as in my situation changed my chain to DID because what I had read here and the chain noise (slap) was just wrong.

sprockets were and are fine. but we all know they will wear and if I can get some spares, im a happy Bunny :thumb2
