Chain recall thread

I just had a chat with the dealer and my bike was not within the range of chassie no's that needs replacement. I've got an early '08 so obviously there's a batch of bad (or worse than normal?) chains that has been shipped from CZ.

I have not had one single issue with my chain. I have 1400km's on the bike and havn't moved the chain adjusters since the bike was new. I think I'll wear this one out and go for a DID when this one has reached end of life.

I have my F800GS (July 2009 model) going into Chester dealer next week for the rocker cover leak to be fixed for the 2nd time in 10 mths!

I asked the guy if they can replace the chain and sprockets as it has a tight spot after just 13,000 miles. He said they can do this as their has been a 'recall'. Great news so i am going to replace the chain as soon as i get home with a DID one that came in the post today. Save me buying sprockets for my DID chain .

Thanks to all the members who have put time and effort into bringing this to bmw' attention.

Sadly madame, like many, is £150 out of pocket as we were trapped in the catch22 of waiting for a recall or paying and independent to fix it (Lind would not fit a DID as it would invalidate the bikes warranty ).

Anyone got a picture or full description of the replacement items?

It maybe prudent of them to change the rocker cover at the same time as some of them are slightly warped. Did Micky's twice with new gaskets & sealant applied in correct area -still leaked - cured with new cover

I emailed Williams BMW in Manchester to see if my year old GS was included in the recall. I sent them my chassis number- and they said I wasn't included in the recall so I must have the updated chain already.

Lets hope it's that simple.

My new bike, so new that it's not yet ready for delivery, has the CZ chain.

I mentioned it for the dealer; he checked up on recalls and confirmed that chain on this has a recall.
NOS 2009 model.

I am very pleased for being able to read along on this forum to get all these valuable advises.

But when reading threads/fora from other countries, be careful with issues about recalls.
Some US recalls has no relation to European bikes and vice versa.

But this time it was relevant.

Thats odd as Pidcocks happily supplied and fitted a DID chain for me under warranty?! I just paid the difference for the chain against the crappy standard replacement one. That was 6 months ago..

Received notification that my GS8 has an 'outstanding quality enhancement' so it's now booked in for replacement chain & sprockets.

I've never had any problems, though I've had a scottoiler fitted from new & am still fairly low mileage (just over 6k). Nevertheless, would like to add my thanks for all the good work by fellow Tossers for pushing the chain issue!

Being an eternal optomist I'd assumed mine was fine, so potentially you've saved my ass from a nasty spill. Cheers folks Mucho appreciated!

I can confirm that fitting a non crap chain and sprockets does not invalidate the warranty as it is a consumable item, like tyres and filters. I was told this by Bristol Motorrad when I fitted my DID myself and they have since done the rocker cover re-seal under warranty. Stands to reason really - as fireman said you could be anywhere and need to replace a worn out chain or tyre with whatever is available.

Anyone in Bristol had a recall yet as I have heard nothing?

Just got a recall letter, doesn't say what it's for but I'm assuming it's the chain. Hope so, I've done 17,000 on the original since March 09 but they're welcome to change it!

My gs800 is over two years old and I fitted a good quality chain after 1000 miles, before a trip to africa,due to problems talked about on this site.Yesterday I received a notice to replace the chain and sprokets (out of warrenty) and due to me already upgrading they said I can leave mine on and keep the replacments a spares for the future.Great service,shame they fitted the crap in the first place.

Took my '09 bike in for a 12 month/6000 mile service at Bristol Motorrad yesterday and they fitted the new chain and sprockets while it was there.

For info, the service cost £142.00 and I got a loan bike gratis

I emailed BMW Motorrad regarding the chain and sprocket issue. Here's the reply;

No. This problem seems to be mainly for 2008 650/800 twins. This problem is related to chain failure, not chains wearing out. Singles are much harder on chains than twins. My old 650 was coming up for a chain at about 14000m.

Broken Chain

Well it finally happened, chain snapped yesterday 16K on the clock(May 08 bike). I had been concerned as to if it failed how would the situation evolve as it was I pulled away from a junction and suddenly lost drive luckily the chain did not lock up on the sprockets and simply fell away to leave me coasting into the E17 motorway. I was recovered to Mabbe BMW in Wielsbeke, Belgium who promptly fitted a new chain and sprockets this morning under the recall. The box the chain came in was marked "Kettler" didn't they used to make pedal go-carts!

Greg, I'm not biting on that one but I did laugh to myself whilst stood on the side of the motorway when I looked up chain in my French dictionary to reveal that it was chaine. Harry
