I sheared that bolt off too... Christ knows what kind of concrete esque locking compound bmw use.... feckin ridiculous..

Can you believe it - a dealer that can't drill out a sheared bolt? Even I can do that!

They tried but its a high tensile bolt and it just skidded off and damaged the swing arm.

Sounds like they will have to take out the swingarm, clamp it then use a drill press, - could be expensive!
This does not seem right - when is a bolt seized and how much effort was put into "easing" the bolt out before being sheared? Seems a very debatable point which could be argued bad workmanship meant the bolt sheared. Under the conditions you state the bolt should not have seized under such normal wear and tear and therefore is a warantable item. Worth a try but you have probably looked at this already.
So they've broken your bolt and damaged your swing arm? Hmm, surely they have to take "reasonable care" when undertaking work. Seems like they should owe you...........

Well yes this is what I was hoping, but of course they see it the other way. Been told today bike being reassembled tomorrow to collect on Wed.

So friendly local dealer 'he say no' to chain recall on my '08 800 and follows up with 'so yours is ok'. Hmm. So with 8500 miles and new tyres needed I've decided can't take the risk and will fork out for new chain/sprockets as thye wheel will be out. Guess I've already answered my question of should I get these or should I trust BMW, but thoughts on this?
So it's Motorworks X ring with soft link. Questions to the experts, any issues with a soft link and how do I get the old chain off without a rivet extractor? I don't want to remove swing arm if at all possible and not sure if a hacksaw is any good with high tensile.
Any assistance welcome.

Did my girlfriends F650 at the weekend. I bought the DID chain (VM2 x-ring) and riveter from this guy on ebay - £111 for the tool and chain.

I just used my dremel to cut the old chain off. Cut through it like butter.
Once off I linked the new chain to the old with the new soft link (dont need to add the plate on the other side of the soft link) and with the bike in neutral pulled the new chain through over the drive sprocket. Removed the soft link and then used it to closed the new chain. When pushing the soft link plate onto the rivets I used a micrometer to measure the distance between the two link plates so that I dint squash the x-ring causing a tight spot (I took the correct measurements from a complete link on the new chain).
Another tool you will need before starting the job is a 24mm socket and (optional) breaker bar so you can loosen the axel nut.
I'm no expert and this is the first chain I've put on a bike. 60 mile blast later and job seems to be a good'un

Thanks for info Phil.
Like the idea of the micrometer and didn't think about using a dremel, I'll dust it down! Seems a shame to shell out good money but once you've lost trust it always plays on your mind.

To update you on my saga.
The seized bolt was drilled out by another company.Unfortunatly they scratched the swing arm.(still charged dealer £40)! See photo.
When they rang to tell me this I was also told that the mecanic had noticed that a bolt on my bash plate was lose so he tightened it then noticed that the sump was cracked! New sump ordered and fitted this morning.
So I went back to dealer this afternoon worried as to what all this was going to cost me, in fact I got the service 10% off cost £76, I agreed to accept the scratch, with some paint on it should be nearly invisible, so they have'nt charged for the seized bolt, and I hope I won't be charged for the sump they have asked for a goodwill claim from BMW. So my "free" chain recall cost me £24 for loan bike insurance which I can live with. Note in photo my crap CZ chain was replaced with a .......CZ chain.

If you didn't have bad luck, then I'm sure you'd have no luck at all!
I think you've got away with this one quite lightly (fingers crossed). My chain (which looked perfectly OK was replaced with another CZ chain, just a different colour.
So far so good.

There's a 'chain and sprocket replacement' recall issued for my F650GS, bought new end of May 2008. (in Belgium)
My current chain set will be replaced for free, after it is worn out.
My dealer read the recall paperwork a few times and told me that there is a remark about 'the recall chain-set only replacing a BMW chain-set'.
When your dealer fitts another brand of chain, the recall doesn't imply.
Some dealers use riveted chains, because it saves them a load of work...the BMW chain is of a 'completely closed' type and harder to install.

chester bm replaced mine this week as recall work on a f800gs but i have to say that i have not had any issues with the old set, no tight spots or hardly any slackening.
i just give it s quick spray after a good ride out ( on a warm chain) . never power washed the chain nor felt the need to clean it either.
just hope the new kit works well.

Vines in Caterham have just replaced the chain on my '09 F650GS, when I took it in for its annual service, with no prompting from myself. The replacement is a CK, with dark grey side plates.
They gave me the option of having the brake fluid replaced, so I said yes, and the front brake is now noticeably "firmer" than before...

I go in next week for the 12k service and will have the chain replaced. I've not adjusted it and the only opportunity would have been at the 600, 6k services and new rear tyre @9k by a non BMW workshop. The Scottoiler's kept it nice and moist.
I didn't receive a 'product enhancement' letter from NOG which is a little disappointing.
Hope the new chain is not made of cheese...

NOG replaced my chain a couple of weeks ago, I've covered about 2.5K since and it looks OK, but so did the old one...
Have NOG quoted you a cost for the 12K service, as mine is due soon?

My current chain looks fine, but who am i to turn away a shiny replacement 
I was too lazy to get a quote
I'm booked in for the 16th, so will let you know when i get the bill:
- 12k service (shims/oil/filter/etc)
- replace break fluid - rear has gone muddy
- warranty chain & sprocket replacement

Just had the 12k service done by Vines of Guildford, chain and sprockets done gratis at the same time. Early 08 bike. Hadn't had problems with chain to date, hope I don't with new one either!
Highly recommended for service, bike collected and delivered for only £15 each way, faulty heated grips replaced FOC despite bike being out of warranty, only a small labour charge. Only problem is their lead time when booking a slot!
