Thinking of changing my 2009 GSA for a Triumph Tiger 800xc.
Main reason being weight related.
Test rode 800xc today and was impressed.
Anyone gone down this route before.
Any oppinions.

The Tiger is 8 kilos lighter, so it's hardly worth considering a change purely on weight difference alone.

I had a proper test ride on a Tiger before buying the GS. The weight difference might not look a lot on paper but it feels like a lot everywhere: putting it on the centre stand, wheeling it about, slow speed manoeuvres. It would be much better commuter. I found the fuelling just fine, and I'm fussy about that as my previous 3 bikes all had poor fuelling. I have ridden most Triumphs and the fuelling on all of them was excellent.

The Tiger handled very well and was comfortable, all in all a very likeable bike. The reasons I didn't buy it were: it had to be worked harder at motorway speeds and although comfortable it didn't give me that feeling that I could ride it all day and somehow, although I liked it, I felt I would be wanting to change it in a couple of years. Also SWMBO had given me the nod for a Beemer and wold have been really pissed if I wanted to change in a couple of years.

It was a tough decision as the Beemer cost me £3500 more and I don't think it's worth that much more.

No way Tiger

I test rode the Tiger and took it straight back, too light, clutch was C**p and heavy and was killing my wrists inside 60mins
I also made it look like a moped beneath me:blagblah
Just my ten penneth

Wet weight ready to ride.

Tiger 215kg.

GSA 256kg.

Difference 41kg. about 6.4 stone.

I had a Tiger XC when they came out, and couldn't get on with it. For the reasons listed above mainly. Why don't you have a look at a regular 12GS instead, or are the motives financial?

Maybe the answer is a standard GS which is 30kg lighter than the GSA - maybe more with the bling GSA riders insist on adding

hi,

just done the exact thing your thinking of,08 gsa to 800xc

i had some reliability issues on my bmw,i understand thats not a massive common issue, felt it was to costly to keep, stuff like the daft clutch, having to split the bike in two for replacement, also i had the esa version, which i never felt was worth the money, and sooooooo expensive to fix(and yes was replaced under warranty),once again i was unlucky, before ya all moan....the fuel tank is great,BUT only if ya all got them,so whats the point and finally had the worst local dealer on the planet(barrie robson)

on a plus side i like the look of the gsa,and the best on holding its value,

the xc,am very happy with mine, yes like any bike ya need to farkle it to feel right(feck me bmw,s are)loverly engine,on par with the gsa 08,defo lighter, lower long term running costs, although proberly lost in the resale value,
i think it looks smart, and yes its a british company:beerjug:

Only thinking about changing.
Thought i'd like some feedback and oppinions from people who might
have experience of both bikes.
Thanks for your input.

I've also posted this in the Triumph 800 posts.

I tested the XC last year and was not impressed, the suzuki v strom is a much better bike and a lot less money.

I've not ridden the triumph but I have tried the 800GS and it's a totally different ride to the GS - I suspect the trumpet would be similar.

You're comparing apples with pears. I guess they both have an ''off road' imagine - but have very different engines. For me the thing that appeals about the GS is the flat twin and the ride.

Personally I'm looking at the 990 Dakar... Bit more raw & less boring than my GSA .

I agree ESA expensive option. Mine's predominantly on sport, except when off road... With the money - no value there then.... Atom is my next whim... Xc800 never appealed aesthetically to me...
