Is it a possible DIY job? I seem to remember to can get a tool from Motorworks to remove the castelated nut, but someone warned me off due to needing 3 pairs of hands and 3000nm force to undo it and change the seal.

I don't realy want to pay towards another plasma screen at the s'dealers if I can help it.

it can be done you do need the tool for the nut you do need 2 wheel bolts you do need a good heat source( not a heat gun) and you need the best impact wrench you can get be it air powered or battery because bmw in their wisdom do the nuts up to 200+nm and put fecking loctite on them other than that 2hours work:augie

Ta - 2 hours? I've got a knackered diff in the garage that spewed it's main seal and collapsed it's crown bearing so maybe I'll do some practice on that first. I've got a good heat source, it'll just be holding the bevel assembly from turning that'll be the trick - I'm guessing putting a rod through a couple of wheel bolts will do that as you say. I just don't have a 200nm torque wrench for doing/undoing it - maybe I'll just use the 'scaffold pole' method..

Thanks

I've done a picture write up. Should be in this section somewhere.

Fit a new sealing ring as well as a new seal. Otherwise it'll leak again.

do not use your wheels bolts obtain some spares because you will bend them if you try the long pole method don't forget there is a gear ratio involved that is why you need an impact gun to undo the ring nut and because the shock loading breaks the loctite seal very little load is put through the gears have a look at steptoes pictures he does not do things he does just because the tools are there he does it for a reason:rob

I have a tool you can borrow that I made up along the lines of Steptoes if its any use to you. You will need access to a realy powerful hammer gun though.

Thanks - and thanks for offer of a loan. I've not got a impact gun - I've been thinking about a compressor and some tools for a while but not got one yet. I'll take a look at Steptoes instructions and see if I think I can manage that - and I'll get a quote from the s'dealers on the job giving them the diff off the bike.

Thanks again
