picked up a 78 r80/7 for a good price this week, it had been sat for a year in an underground garage. she fired up first time with a good battery but the charge light is on all the time . electrics is not my strong point ! so could anyone give me some ideas of the best place to start looking for the problem that would be great, many thanks, steve

Check the alternator brushes and continuity of the rotor winding.

I had a similar problem with a R100T.

Replaced the rotor, brushes and diode board - still the same.

Voltage regulator of £18 sorted the problem :blast I would start with that first. If you can borrow a voltage regulator off another bike or test it, see if the light goes out and if notwork towards everything hidden under the front cover i.e. brushes, alternator rotor etc :beerjug:

Yes should be, is exactly what I swapped with to
check mine

thanks maverick, the 80/7 is in a few bits now as the PO was going to bob it,looked bloody awful and hes chopped 2 inches out the sub frame,so another is sought or put inches back in,got all standard parts from him yesterday. i ll give the swap a go when its all back together. cheers, steve

I appear to have misread the original post. My money would be on the diode board.
