Charged for loan bike!!

I check the mileage before and on the way back with any loan bike and round it up to the nearest litre at 40mpg. I 'd have used that on my own bike anyway.

If the result is too low for the pump to vend I just have to put more in to pay for the convenience:)

One way or another all costs have to be covered in order for a company to stay in business - the skill, from a dealers point of view is in how to present them in the most honest and transparent way to the customer.

rather than get 50 yards from their forecourt only to have the fuel light come on.
50 yards from the dealers forecourt, the petrol light comes on....and what's that telling you exactly??
Put some bloody fuel in it and run it back to empty.
Shame the dealer in question wasn't able to hold your hand throughout the ride.
Admit it Bob...you don't REALLY have anything to moan about do you?

Hmmm...strange.

I took my new GS into Wollaston around a month ago for the 600 service. They loaned me an '07 K1200GT for the day without any 'admin' charge. What's more they took it round to their on-site pump before I left to fill it up for me. Mind you, there is (was?) a £1k excess on their insurance:spitfire

I went to Wollaston on Saturday and the excess on the loaner was £250 - Maybe it's recently changed or perhaps my grey hair and clean licence makes a difference????

I had new tyres fitted to my 1200GS at a very reasonable price - too much hassle to do it myself. I had a long round trip to do before returning for my bike so they kindly lent me K1200RS - nice!

Overall their customer service was very good - so I may well return there for the 24,000 mile service.

Can't argue with Wilfred Bramble's free loan 1100. I always put more petrol in it than I've used. :thumb2

Absolutely right mate. Just thought I'd submit the post to kill a few minutes as I had nothing better to do at the time. Thanks for your input - very worthwhile.....

I think the point were all forgetting here is were talking BMW dealerships.

My friend got a CBR600RR as a loan bike when he took in his CBR600RR. The time after than they gave him some aprilia supersport thing which was equally as nice. If Honda can do it, why cants BMW??? And I assure you Honda have lower servicing charges!!!

To take in what is most likely a <5 year old bike worth 12k new and then offered a older bike and then have the cheek for some places to want to charge you more for the loaner is CRAZY!!!

Steptoe: My point earlier was that if they were charging 15 pound per loan then they would more that likely profit on the bikes they are loaning therefore it would be better for them to have a few.

I bought my bike in Vines and had the service done at Motorrad Central. I had it in for 4 days while they looked at a mis-fire. I got a loan of a brand new Dakar completely free! Top class service and no hidden charges. A great dealer!

Going to the first post i think that maybe the dealer was a bit pissed you bought elsewhere? And quite rightly too. The best deal is not always the best deal. It goes much further than price!

Dealerships cost money. Lots and lots of it. Courtesy bikes are not a profit opportunity. As Steptoe says they are subject to people taking the piss on a regular basis. Fuel, minor indiscretions and insurance all cost.

Bottom line is that we all want top class everything and someone has to pay the piper!

Ok.
At £15 a time then the best they can hope for is 5 x £15. That assumes no-one has it for 2, 3, 4 or more days. Its an admin charge, not a daily charge.

So they get £75 a week maximum. Then lets assume they work 50 weeks a year. They now have £3750, or to be more precise £312.5 per month.

Rather than spoon feed you the whole calculation please factor in;
Depreciation
Servicing
Tyres
Interest ( they need to be funded after all!)

Need I go on??

Grow up, pay the costs and if you think there is such a thing as a free lunch tell me where!!

Clarks in Dundee give out loan bikes. They are the new demo bikes. Only stipulation is that you fill it up with fuel on return.

SLM charge for a loan bike, £15.00, and I have no problem with that. I reckon it's fair enough that a charge for insurance is made, £15.00 for a bike all day is good value.

So if my dealer can offer me a older bike for free whilst paying normal BMW dealership prices then dont you think if somebody else is paying £15 then they should get a newish bike? I do.

Lugs:

Depreciation - there is none to worry about as after 4 years they own the bike outright and any equity in the bike is additional profit

Servicing - what about the other 8k they have spare????

Tyres - ditto

Interest - if a dealer cant get a good rate then who can, and in more cases dealers will no doubt own their demo bikes outright.

Also, I dont think your in a position to tell people to grow up when the most you know of a person is what they type after the pub has closed. Where is your web etiquette? :nono

And if you work out it... our calculations are the same as I based mine over 4 years or running the bike.

Currently it would seem demo bikes are purchased at around 8-10 years old and they ran for a further 4-6 year. I dont have a problem with this one little bit, but if I were paying for a loan bike then I would!

When i was last in for my service at Wollastons i could choose between £15 for a loan bike with £250 excess or free with a £1000 excess. Seamed far to me.

I paid £25 for the loan bike on my last service:eek: from Vines of Guildford as well as filling it up with fuel and £5 to get rid of the old oil:mcgun

Dave

I am currently riding William's '07 R1200S, which has a full tank of fuel, and cost me nothing, while my bike is in for a service. There is a £15 charge if the loaner is returned with less than a full tank.

Zero

In order.

Depreciation? They never keep bikes for that long. Ever. It is possibly an old shitter they had as a px. Probably just a spare they keep for emergencies.
Servicing? The magic oil fairy doesn't exist. Oil costs.
Tires? Ditto. The tyre fairy packed it in years ago.
Interest? Come on. Even a good rate on a stocking plan from a major finance house costs. And if they own them outright, which they don't, then its a depreciating asset that needs funded.

Trust me. They are NOT a profit centre. Ever. Ever. Ever. :rob

Also, I dont think your in a position to tell people to grow up when the most you know of a person is what they type after the pub has closed. Where is your web etiquette? :nono

What do you mean? Have I upset the etiquette?

Demo bikes are not that old. Thats what we would call an old shitter.

I dont have a problem with this one little bit

Yes you do!

, but if I were paying for a loan bike then I would!

Why??
