Hi all

Have read loads of threads re charging light probs, just to confirm 93 R100 gs charging light didnt come on when ignition switched on but having started would flicker when idling.
Now doesnt come on at all last trip 40 miles since light failed, battery still seems to have lots left in it, diode board doesnt look or smell fried. The alternator looks in good nick and the brushes have lots of length left in them The warning light bulb is ok.

I havnt done any multimeter tests yet as I am not good with electrics. The big question is, is it the rotor. All the other posts seem to point to this

Any help appreciated.

test the rotor with multimeter and find out :rob you dont need to remove it just lift thr brushes put a business card underneeth them then put the probes on the rings, open circuit = knackered rotor. continuity between either ring and earth = knackered rotor. iirc if the resistance between the rings is anything other than 3 ohms its knackered aswell( please wait for grown up's conformation on resistance). it is also worth checking that you havenot crushed the wire at the top of the front cover when it was refitted.

edit. rotor should have 3.4 ohm resistance (+/- 0.4 ohm)

Thanks for that, there is no continuity bet either ring and earth or from ring to ring with the brushes isolated. I take it the brushes have to be in contact with the rings for the ohms test.
Unfortunately my meter is for numptys and doesnt have the sophistication of measuring ohms. I will have to buy or borrow one that does.. The wires from the casing are ok as far as I can see still in there grommet.

keep the brushes isolated for ohms test.

if there is open cuircuit between the rings the rotor is U/S it will need replacing. motorworks have 2nd hand ones for £30 :beerjug:

if there the rotor windings are broken, then surely the light will never come on? :nenau

Thanks for the advice , new second hand rotor fitted, lights on charge up all fixed.
Somewhere along the line I dropped the inner plastic spacer for the screen fitting and the jack russell ran off with it and has hidden it in the garden.

Never mind I should be able to look for it in the dark now..
