Charging question.......

Is it OK to plug the BMW Lithium charger into the on-board socket on the dash, And have the ignition on whilst doing stuff, like settings, connections ect?
Or is it better to charge the bike, unplug, then turn on ignition ?

It will do no harm at all. In theory. But that depends on what you're playing with.

But it will reset the charging cycle on the charger.

So if you're leaving it to change, reset the cycle before you walk away.

However. It's good practice to disconnect any chargers when tinkering. Why would you want it connected??

I have to connect the Carpuride. Go through the settings on that, My Sena, Phone etc. But also, to go through some of the bike settings.
Only reason I ask, is the Lithium batteries are "Smart" and record if they've been discharged too far, and then not covered by warranty. So, Leaving the charger connected whilst tinkering will keep it full ?

Your battery is not that sophisticated. Nor is your local dealer with their capability or interest in testing it should a problem arise.

Those li batteries for the 1300 are very expensive. So I agree you should look after it.

Btw, the terminals on those batteries are VERY fragile. Follow the torque specs for them. I think it's something like 3-4nm. They snap off if you treat them like you would a lead acid terminal.

With warranties, batteries are always an area of bitterness and contention. It's almost always the fault of the owner. But near impossible to prove.

So, My service manager, whom I've known for a very long time has given me false information? I was informed they stored information if they had been discharged, The reason was for warranty?

I don’t know why and I have no sensible explanation or reason but I always turn it off and unplug it whilst I’m doing anything.

The lithium batteries will go into a sort of "lock down" state if the voltage drops too far. I believe from others experiences that even connecting a charger won't wake the battery up, but they can be reset by connecting jump leads from another good fully charged 12v battery while the charger leads are attached. Once the battery has been reset the donor battery can be detached and the charger should continue to charge the lithium battery.

However I couldn't say how the bike's ZFE (Zentrale Fahrzeugelektronik or Central Chassis Electrics system) will react. Typically these chargers (wrongly referred to as CANbus chargers) are designed to open the circuit when the ignition is off.

I would personally hook the charger directly to the battery, then fiddle with settings with ignition on all you like.

BMW, and the manual tell you to plug directly into the 12V socket. Its designed that way. Which I've been doing for 25 years ! with no issues.

Agreed, but if the socket is not powered with the ignition off then nothing will happen.

Understood, with ignition on the outlet should simply be an open circuit to the battery so should be no problem at all.
Although if your battery is well charged you can have the ignition on (no headlights) for easily an hour with very little drain on the battery

That's good to know. Thats plenty of time. These new batteries are all new to me. And I've read lots about how temperamental they can be.

I don't think they're particularly temperamental. Just as robust as a standard agm battery really, they just have a slightly different charging requirements.
Good luck on all the bluetooth connections though. That can be a complicated world figuring out who wants to connect before who lol. Fun though

Nice. I'm strictly Sena 50s to phone, nothing more. All I really want is louder Sena speakers. They're fine for bike to bike comm. but useless for streaming podcast or music, and barely sufficient for phone calls.

I use a Sena 50S, with the original HD speakers. I thought about upgrading to the newer HK speakers, however, The HD speakers are great as it is. I cant have them on full volume, as it will blow my head off. Thats through the TFT or the Carpuride. Phone calls too are perfect, people always say they cant believe im on a motorcycle when talking to them. The most important Thing for sound quality, is the exact perfect location for each ear. Slightly off and they be rubbish. (Helmets - Shoe Neotec 2 & Scorpion ADX-1)
